One of the most creative ideas I developed for my Edo-inspired short film came from the spiritual importance of the head—uhunmwun—in Benin thought. The head was understood as the source of a person’s destiny, success, survival, and prosperity.

At the level of the kingdom, the well-being of the Edo people was closely connected to the sacred head of the Oba. Brass commemorative heads placed on royal ancestral altars therefore evoked the authority of deceased rulers and their continuing ability to guide and protect the kingdom.

This inspired me to imagine a private ancestral chamber accessible only to the Oba and a small circle of trusted attendants. In my fictional interpretation, the reigning Oba enters this restricted space to communicate directly with former rulers, seek their guidance, and reaffirm his legitimacy as their successor. The chamber represents the continuity of divine kingship, linking the living monarch with the royal ancestors who ruled before him. This secret room is my own fantasy addition, but it draws from the historical importance of royal ancestral communication in Benin court culture.

The carved ivory objects rising from the brass heads are known as royal altar tusks. Each tusk was inserted into the opening of a hollow cast-brass head, forming one of the principal elements of an altar dedicated to a deceased Oba. Their carved figures served as historical and dynastic records, recalling former rulers, important court officials, military victories, ritual authority, and the political, economic, and spiritual foundations of Benin kingship. Together, the brass head and ivory tusk formed a powerful image of ancestral presence, royal memory, and the enduring sacred authority of the dynasty.
