#ComingSoon "Canadian Schools: A hazardous workplace" - A new report will be available on tomorrow, Wednesday, February 18th! This report, which draws on a survey completed by over 4,000 CUPE members, shines a critical light on the issue of violence in Canadian schools.
📣 The @eduviolence report was featured in the Toronto Star, shining a spotlight on the growing violence in Ontario schools!
“If unaddressed, the retention crisis in education is going to be so much worse,” the researchers warn.
They link the rise in violence to “insufficient funding,” at a time when demand for student supports is increasing.
The report finds that, when adjusted for inflation, per-student funding has declined provincially — leading to larger class sizes, too few EAs, limited resources, and delayed assessments for students with complex needs.
📉 Chronic underfunding is fuelling this crisis — and it’s taking a toll on students, staff, and the entire public education system.

“Schools were once places of education... This is becoming less apparent.”
In a new report from @eduviolence, education workers in Ontario are raising URGENT concerns about a system in crisis:
➡️ Students with learning disabilities are being left behind.
➡️ Behavioural needs are going unmet.
➡️ Educational Assistants are stretched too thin to provide consistent support.
➡️ The system is breaking—and the consequences are mounting.
We are no longer serving all children—and that has to change.

Did you miss the powerful presentations by @eduviolence at our 8th Annual Convention? Don't worry! You can still dive into their eye-opening report, "Running on Fumes: Violence, Austerity, and Institutional Neglect in Ontario Schools", available at https://t.co/k0KAtvOs3L. #CUPE
"My job as an EA is not at all what it was like when I started... EAs used to assist with learning... We became an adult students could trust, a friendly advocate. An adult who could employ strategies to help them regulate before they became frustrated or acted out... In the first 20 years, I was never attacked or struck; whereas today, it is a common occurrence."
There’s been a dramatic and deeply troubling transformation in the role of Education Assistants and other frontline education workers over the past two decades… especially in the last seven years.
What was once a supportive, student-focused role is now defined by daily violence, chronic understaffing, and emotional exhaustion.
🛑 This is not sustainable. This is not safe. Violence should not be part of the job!
📣 It’s time for the government to listen to education workers and take real action!

An important finding from our latest research report: EAs are increasingly tasked with behavioural issues rather than their intended duties of supporting learning. The crisis of workplace violence is leaving most classrooms short-handed while EAs “run to put out constant fires.”
“Somehow the role of an Educational Assistant (EA) who helped little Johnny read and write transformed into 'get geared up and get to work'." - Educational Assistant, K-3
The role of an Educational Assistant has changed dramatically over the past 20 years! Instead of focusing on helping students learn, grow, and thrive, EAs today are facing:
❌ The highest rates of classroom violence
❌ Being told that violence is “part of the job”
❌ Wearing padding to work to protect themselves
❌ Chronically short-staffed, with not enough support to meet students’ needs
❌ Underpaid and underprotected, often needing second or third jobs just to get by
Enough is enough!
We need the provincial government to stop ignoring this crisis and work with us—NOW—to end violence in Ontario schools and ensure safe, supportive learning environments for all #OntEd students.

“I have personally watched the violence go from 0 to 100 in my 17 years working for the school board. It is unacceptable and should not be happening within a school or anywhere else. It’s disheartening that it is kept a secret and not talked about" - Educational Assistant, K-8.
