Two people I follow were arguing opposite sides of the same question last week. I think they're both half right.

One says multi-carrier rate-shopping with business rules is the moat — if your shipping software can't do it in real time, all you have is a label printer. The other says software features are worthless now because AI can build most features faster and cheaper than ever. Differentiate on the network, not the capability.

I've spent a decade building the engine they're arguing about. So here's where I land.

The feature commoditizes. They're right about that — basic rate-shopping logic is no longer a differentiator. What doesn't commoditize is the carrier integration underneath it. The edge cases. The label spec changes without warning. The carrier relationships and production wiring were never sitting on the public internet for an AI to copy.

AI can write the rules engine. It can't reliably keep that integration running when the carrier changes something on their end.

The feature was never the moat. The wiring was. And the wiring is the part nobody wants to talk about — until it breaks on your busiest day.
