Rupert Giles was the heart and soul of Buffy, the one adult who could help these kids make sense of all of the crazy stuff going on around them and a person who was fiercely protective of them.
Anthony Head played him with warmth, humour and charm. RIP
@kkfla737 Would have loved to hear this discussed on World Soccer Talk I know you said this before a while ago how some of these Euro Leagues were pricing themselves out of the US market. Feels like they were banking off getting dollars off their international pedigree. Well getting harder
Euro soccer Leagues not named EPL/UCL are in for dark days as🇺🇸 rights properties.
News today La Liga who ESPN pays $175m yr had its best viewed year, in yr 5 of 8 yr deal avg 91k🧐 across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 & ESPND. Yes you read that right.
MLS in its last yr w/Disney avg 343k.
During the streaming wars of the late 2010s and early 2020s, American broadcasters were paying big bucks for European soccer. Serie A got $75M/year from CBS in '21. That's now closer to $10M as it extends for another year in a much tougher market. https://t.co/isf0Xt44Ve
@EdwinGames4@AlexMSilverman ESPN announced record La Liga viewership... At 91k per match. Don't think that's what ESPN was looking for: https://t.co/G9aiyUFGQN
.@LaLiga's best season yet on @espn.
▪️91K avg viewers on linear TV (+14%)
▪️ El Clásico hit 1.3M viewers — an all-time record for ESPN
▪️ ESPN Deportes up 11%
Year 5 of 8. $175M/year deal.

Is MLS really willing to relocate CF Montreal? @ManuelVeth joins The Soccer Business Podcast this week to discuss what is going on with MLS & Canada?
@BravesAndBirds At the time Sports Media spun ESPN other networks decisions like CBS paying $75m yr on Serie A league way below MLS in viewership as it was on MLS it was MLS fault instead of a collective asking questions about the networks strategies. I'm sure you remember @TheAthletic columns.
@BravesAndBirds That 343k was the last year on ESPN networks which was the entire gripe. ESPN paid La Liga $175m yr but played money-ball with MLS lowballing it. It was a dumb error at the time I called out as idiotic and looks an even worse decision with time.

@chriskilroy@espn Exactly I still blame ESPN for chasing fools gold. They wanted what they thought was a quick victory and didn't care enough about domestic soccer to dedicate to growing a sport or league in MLS that alreadt had more viewership.
A reminder @espn isn't above reproach and makes mistakes. Bigger issue tho is post Skipper resignation 2018-22 how no one in big decision making had passion/knowledge for domestic ⚽️ certainly not enough to know this was a error. Wonder if that view is changing or has channged?
Remember to 🙄 the next time you hear soccer is popular in the US just not MLS.

@BravesAndBirds MLS was similar ESPN only aired 34 games 100s of gms on streaming. Look there's no way to spin this to make it look good for La Liga. ESPN way overpaid and thought they were getting a more popular property for $175m yr. There are no caveats or spin for these bad# ESPN Deportes#🥴
