Superchain was created with the goal of combining the Optimism Mainnet network with OP Chains (blockchains utilizing other OP Stack) to establish a cohesive ecosystem. The main objective behind this merger is to achieve scalability at the internet level. All Superchain projects will be implemented on the OP Stack (which offers solutions to simplify project processes and construct Layer 2 blockchains) while also sharing communication functions, bridges, security systems, governance, and network enhancements. The Optimism Foundation envisions expanding the blockchain ecosystem into a decentralized web, replacing centralized entities with a permissionless protocol. Superchain by Optimism is effectively horizontally scalable and necessitates the involvement of multiple blockchains. As the computational workload of a blockchain increases linearly, there is a need for parallel operation to scale horizontally. However, traditional designs have their limitations, as each chain adopts a unique security model, potentially increasing systemic risks when new chains are integrated into the ecosystem.

The horizontally scalable superchain requires multiple blockchains to participate, as the hardware needed to synchronize a blockchain increases linearly with the level of computation. To scale horizontally, blockchains must run in parallel, yet traditional designs have limitations, such as each chain using a new security model that escalates systemic risk when introducing new chains into the ecosystem.
Each execution shard can support the execution of various programs within a specific environment. Ethereum developers decided to address limitations by moving towards data sharding and utilizing "blobs" to expand Rollups. Data blobs are processed, stored, and verified by consensus nodes independently of execution nodes, ensuring enhanced security. EVM does not access or store data in blobs, benefiting Rollup groups the most. Data storage is priced in integer units of blobs, with each blob equaling 128 kB. The cost of using blobs will vary based on market supply and demand, with 3 blobs/block being the standard offering (384 kB). Additional blobs will incur a 12.5% price increase, while using fewer than 3 blobs will result in a 12.5% decrease in price.
Blob is a specialized temporary data storage solution for Ethereum applications and Rollup. Ethereum's initial roadmap focused on execution sharding, but eventually shifted to data sharding due to limitations. Blobs are processed, stored, and verified by consensus nodes separately from execution nodes, benefiting Rollup significantly. EVM does not store data in blobs, making Rollup the primary beneficiary of this upgrade.
@EhhlPaulilloo Layer 2 protocols like zkSync, Starknet, Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism swiftly upgraded their systems to enhance scalability and efficiency in blockchain transactions.
@NicolasIF123 Each shard in the execution shard can run different programs simultaneously in its designated environment to maximize efficiency and capacity.
@LulaPame Layer 2 solutions such as zkSync, Starknet, Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism quickly implemented upgrades following the success of the Dencun upgrade.
@LulaPame Layer 2 quickly rolled out the updated Dencun version after a successful deployment, ensuring improved performance and functionality for users.
Following the successful deployment of the upgraded version of Dencun, Layer 2 wasted no time in rolling out the update. Prominent projects such as zkSync, Starknet, Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism have all released their updated versions. Many of these projects saw a significant decrease in transaction fees for sending ETH, thanks to the lowered data storage costs. Each execution shard can now be customized to support the execution of a variety of programs. In light of certain limitations and risks, Ethereum developers have chosen to pursue data sharding as a solution to expanding Rollups, using "blobs". Data blobs are processed, stored, and verified by consensus nodes on the consensus layer, independent of execution nodes on the execution layer. This means that EVM does not have access to, nor does it store, data in blobs, thereby benefiting Rollup groups the most. Data storage space is now sold in integer units of blobs, while regular transaction fees remain unchanged, with calldata charged at 16 gas for non-zero bytes and 4 gas for zero bytes. Only blob transactions will utilize both gas fee markets.
@panteistornito scalability and efficiency. Data sharding allows for parallel processing of transactions, reducing congestion on the network and increasing overall performance.
@luciamosqueira1 technical challenges and complexity, the Ethereum team decided to focus on implementing data sharding first to improve scalability before considering execution sharding in the future.
@loirinhogatinho in technology and resources, Ethereum is now prioritizing the transition to Ethereum 2.0, a fully optimized and scalable blockchain network.
