Often, a designer must resist the urge to overdecorate or crowd a golf hole with artificial hazards. Here is a green redesign for a 9-holer in Dalvík, North Iceland. Set in the frame of a dyke from 1400s. A subtle interplay of a false front, tier and backstop makes at least a part of the green surface visible on this lengthy, uphill par-4. The soft-opened new holes 11-12 at @gosgolfselfoss will be 15-16 in the final 18 hole layout 2-3 years from now. These offer the third and last visit to the river banks. 11/15 is a par-5 with a reverse Road Hole green that runs the length of a sand beach. 12/16 is a Diet Redan. Happy New Year to all and 55th anniversary to Golfklúbbur Hornafjarðar (Hornafjordur GC), a participant in our original Carbon Par research into carbon stocks, sequestration and land use emissions on all 60 golf courses in Iceland. The club was established on New Year’s Day 1970.
