Someone recently asked me why I've come out so strongly in defence of the rights of trans & gender non-conforming people - specifically the right of trans minors to change the pronouns they use in schools without parental consent.

Beyond the issue impacting a lot of vulnerable Canadian kids, sometimes meaning the difference between life and death, I add this:

Mainstream societies have long gone after the most vulnerable among us because "it's easy" and distracts from broader societal failures.

I witnessed just this in the months and years following Sept. 11 when mainstream North American society bullied an entire faith as if they were somehow responsible for the reprehensible actions of 19 hijackers.

And In the late 1980s and early 1990s, gay men were consistently treated as less than human during the AIDS/HIV epidemic: ignored, ostracized and more often than not, left to die alone with subpar care.

Both groups were easy targets, given the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the AIDS/HIV epidemic. Both groups were also very poorly understood by mainstream society at the time. The onslaught of bigotry and discrimination that Muslims and gay men experienced during these periods is eerily similar to the bigotry that the trans & gender non-conforming communities are now facing.

Going after the most vulnerable in our society is a scary, cynical tactic as old as humanity itself. The only thing that changes is the group targeted, generally deemed the most hapless. It's always wrong and we must always fight valiantly against this dangerous rhetoric and bigotry.
