🚨 I was GROOMED in Somaliland... on camera
A simple haircut turned out to be a front-row seat to a thriving democracy the world refuses to recognise.
You won’t believe what came up mid fade.

A short thread as The Republic of #Somaliland’s Independence Day fast approaches!
The Republic of Somaliland gained its independence by Royal Proclamation on the 26th June 1960!
For those of you unfamiliar with British Law, publishing in the Gazette was not just common practice, but, as per The Crown Office Act 1877, a proclamation only became valid following publication in the Gazette.

Here is my response to @agaraad
We have the documents.
Somaliland has been granted independence through Royal Proclamation Terminating Her Majesty’s Protection which stated:
“whereas it is intended that the Somaliland Protectorate shall become an independent country on the twenty-sixth day of June 1960” (Gazette no. 42074)
The is no mention of or a requirement to unite with “Somalia” in Treaty Series No.44 1960 which has the conditions of independence. The aforementioned treaty has been register with the UN (UN treaties, volume 374)
The idea that independence has been granted to clans separately is absurd and there is no documents to proof it. It has not even been discussed in the Somaliland constitutional conference in London May 1960 in which “unification” with Somalia was discussed. The British did explore to see if tribes in Somaliland were all in agreement for independence for inclusivity purposes but it does not translate to separate independences.
Coming back to the claim that the British government’s has pre-determined to unite Somalia and Somaliland prior to independence. Again there is no such proof in any of the documents. It also goes against UN’s resolution 1514 (XV) which obliged all powers to be transferred to the people of each territory without any conditions or reservations.
In response to your recognition point, recognitions by states interested in the newly independent state was generally accorded in formal ways. such as by representation at the independence ceremony or congratulatory message. Somaliland did receive recognition as 34 countries sent congratulatory messages.
(Example see attached congratulatory message by China to the State of Somaliland).
