Don’t just be confident in your skills. Be confident in your mental toughness as well. Believe in your ability to focus, manage anxiety, and persevere through adversity.
The five mental challenges of sports:
1. Pushing through discomfort.
2. Blocking out distractions.
3. Staying poised under pressure.
4. Thinking critically to solve problems.
5. Managing your ego and working with others.
Work hard to improve in all of these areas!
Mental toughness, once developed, doesn’t just stay with you. You have to continue to work hard to maintain it. If you get lazy, you can become mentally weak again.
Take pride in your mental toughness. Show others how mentally strong you are by staying positive and giving your best effort no matter what adversity you’re faced with!
Leadership is about doing whatever it takes to help your team succeed. Average leaders make excuses and let things happen. Great leaders take ownership and get things done.
Never forget that one of the main purposes of playing sports is to have fun. If you’re not having fun anymore, take a step back and think about how you can change your attitude, behavior, and environment to regain your love for sports.
As an athlete, it’s great to have individual goals, but make sure they are compatible with your team’s goals. If your individual goals are in conflict with your team’s goals, you need to get over yourself and put the team first!
Every time you step onto the field, you represent your team, your school, your city, and your family. Play hard to honor the people and places you care about most!
