We eat problems for breakfast! Struggling with a slow site? Concerned about conversions? We'll boost your competitive edge like a hot mug of builder’s tea!
@DonDubya200 And don't get me started on how everything requires an internet connection and companion app - and how AI is now being crowbarred into every conceivable product. The Talkie Toaster from Red Dwarf no longer seems like an absurd joke.
@naomibrockwell It is shameful to witness the ongoing erosion of standards of consent in the digital realm. People's personal data has been routinely abused without their fully informed consent for decades but soon, withdrawal of consent (informed or otherwise) may no longer be possible at all.
We need a cultural transformation and to push back against the shameful language that demands we justify our desire for privacy.
"What have you got to hide" needs to be replaced with "What do I choose to share"
@RocketDotNet Currently trying to accept a client's account invitation but receiving a 500 from the server when I attempt to set a password. Tested in Safari, FF, Brave and Chrome. Password satisfies all complexity requirements. Any known issues at your end?
Your web app worked wonderfully 10 years ago when I first started using it but after numerous needless UI updates it now takes so much longer to perform the same simple tasks. A classic example of business objectives overriding user objectives.
@toggl please can you revert the latest unnecessary changes to timer view? Now if I want to continue a task I started last week I have to change the date filter to find it, rather than simply clicking the start button on it as was previously possible - extra work for no benefit!
@ahrefs Does your site audit tool support zstd compression? I'm seeing a bunch of errors reporting no compression on pages that I believe were recently switched from brotli to zstd by Cloudflare. Cheers!
As computers have become more powerful, we've somewhat forgotten how to use them efficiently. Instead, we often choose to rely upon raw power for performance. Imagine how many every day resources could be saved if we routinely used the same ingenuity as the authors of Unix Spell:
How do you fit a 250kB dictionary in 64kB of RAM and do lookups? For reference, even gzip -9 cannot compress this file beyond 85kB.
In the 1970s, Douglas McIlroy at AT&T had the same challenge when implementing the spell checker for Unix.
Instead of relying on generic compression techniques, he analyzed the distribution of the data and came up with a compression algorithm which was just 0.03 bits away from the theoretical limit of possible compression. To this day, it remains unbeaten.
The story of how he designed this dictionary lookup from the ground up is a lesson in software engineering. How you consider the resource constraints in front of you and design your solution to run within them.
In my latest article I take you through each step of the design of this ingenious algorithm right from the scratch.

@bhartzer@GoDaddy@Cloudflare Sounds like you have it sorted now, Bill but, if it helps in the future, it is possible to set up 301s directly in Cloudflare using Redirect Rules. Cuts out the need to configure your server if you only intend to redirect the domain elsewhere.
@thetafferboy You're telling me you don't want to watch 3 YouTube videos that are clearly related to your search because the titles contain the first 4 characters from your query?!
@TashP351 I was wondering the other day whether they still published the Radio Times. Glad to see they still do!
Nice to know I'm not the only one who used to obsessively circle all the shows and films I wanted to watch (or record to VHS)!
@WarrenLNaida I used Drupal many years ago. I liked its use of modules as opposed to WP's monolithic plugins. Several years later, I tinkered around with Grav and I've recently had a quick peek at Statamic too - it's clean and seems pretty powerful out of the box.
@WarrenLNaida In a way, I miss having to stand up and walk across the room to change the TV channel - it kept you committed to whatever you were watching.
@natmiletic Genuinely curious as to why so many are inactive?
A client who came to me a few years ago had about the same number. It was the most I'd ever seen on a production site and, on closer inspection, it transpired there were three plugins each adding their own GA tracking code!
Traffic is a vanity metric for digital marketing beginners. The veteran that focuses on conversions can beat a 300k traffic per month website with a 30k one.
Likewise, a 30k Youtube channel with a proper offer and funnel can smoke a 300k one.
