Mariupol five years ago on this very day.
Back then, my friends and I took some time off and just jumped in a car to spend two weeks traveling around Ukraine. Lviv, the Carpathians, Odesa, Kherson, the Black Sea… and, as fate would have it, Mariupol.
We returned six years after graduating from university there and setting off into adult life.
Mariupol genuinely amazed me back then: the city had developed incredibly over those years.
The warm sea, clean and well-kept streets, trendy cafes and restaurants, pubs and parks, fountains and food courts, lawns, the lights of nightlife and youth.
I barely recognized the dirty, deeply provincial city with few prospects where I had studied for five years, suffocating in the chemical smog of gigantic steelworks.
The Drama Theater, the House with the Clock, the universities, the City Garden, “A Thousand Little Things”…
Now it was a cozy, youthful seaside city, rapidly adopting almost every element of the lifestyle and comfort I had already grown accustomed to in the capital. The summer of 2021 was the best and happiest time Mariupol had ever known in its entire history.
I was so impressed that, walking along those sunny avenues with my headphones on, I found myself wondering: maybe to hell with everything, maybe I should move back here, to my roots, to the places of my student youth, where you walked hand in hand with girls on dates, where you worked in a bookstore, and where you drank beer with the guys after classes and ran from the patrol police?
And six months later, this happy city would burn alive to the ground in the flames of war, crushed into a bloody pulp under the tracks of tanks — and by a savage hatred coming from the bottomless abyss of darkness.

Since I am the 'analyst' that made this claim, I want to give more details and statistics that I collected
It's been 4 years Russia 🇷🇺 is targeting Ukrainian 🇺🇦 warehouses, I agree with this statement. However, I disagree with the claim that there is no link between Ukrainian strike campaign and Russia's one.
🔸I have gathered many data, including all impacts on warehouses (military and civilian). During August, 140 hits were recorded, including more than 95 against civilian logistic warehouses, which is twice as much as strikes from January to July 18th.
🔸In July, 63 hits were recorded, but if we go deeper, less than 10 strikes against civilian warehouses happened before July 18. If we check the data shared in the quoted tweet, Nova Poshta was hit 5 times out of 13 before July 18th. In June, 7 out of 14 strikes targeted Nova Poshta (or Ukrposhta).
🔸In fact, Russia had always striked Nova Poshta during this war, with different periods depending on the means and the objectives they had. Many targeted warehouses, especially in Kyiv have a dual use, military and civilian (we've seen countless examples).
🔸It's worth noting the recent increase (May, June, July) is a direct response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian logistics in southern Ukraine : since Russia can barely hit Ukrainian trucks, they targeted the depots and gas stations behind. This was the main argument against what I said : the increase started before. Well, in fact, if you check deeper, most of the increase during these 3 months are themselves related to Ukrainian mid-range strikes, since, btw, most of those are against logistics platforms closer to the front (barely any supermarket was attacked at the time).
🔸The real question we should ask is how the number of targeted warehouses, which were on average 30 per month for 16 months straight (2025-2026) (and include mainly small warehouses close to the front used by the military) and which were on average 60 after Ukraine started mid-range strikes (counter-strikes against warehouses, civilians and military, mainly close to the front) went up to 140, including 95 civlians, if it's not related at all with Ukrainian strike campaign ?
🔸To give more statistics, the top 1 targeted oblast from February to June was Kharkiv, while in August, it was Kyiv oblast and Kyiv city.
🔹I have no interest in commenting the results of the Wildberries strike campaign in here, but saying that Russian strikes against dozens of Ukrainian civilian warehouses are not related with this is simply not true. Otherwise, they would have continued to hit 10 to 20 'civilian' warehouses per month instead of 120 in 45 days.
🔹Now, another question can easily be asked. Was Russia preparing for this campaign ? Maybe ! All the drones they used were here. But I doubt the scale of this campaign would be the same. It was obvious that striking Wildberries (and others, including civilian supermarket around Donetsk) would give the Russians another excuse to wipe out Ukrainian logistics economy and strike civilian supermarket, which is a very dangerous trend. The defense was not coordinated with the attack and these targets are easy ones for Moscow.
Despite many claims, this war is very much into taking the other side's actions and innovations as an example. We saw this with Ukrainian strikes on fuel trucks (met by a Russian response targeting gas stations), Kyiv's increased use of drones in 2022 (met by a Russian response involving the mass deployment of drones), Russian fortifications in 2022 (two years later, Ukraine developed similar lines), and Russian strikes on electrical infrastructure (Kyiv is now targeting the power supply in occupied territories).
The current Russian strike campaign is absolutely terrific for Ukraine and Ukrainians, which should prepare for the the westward expansion of the campaign, with Russian reconnaissance missions towards Rivne a few days ago or Ternopil yesterday...

Honestly, it sounds like one of those moments when the next thing you know, they’re lifting sanctions on russia. But let's see.
ALEX SALVI: Treasury Secretary Bessent told his Russian counterpart at the G20 today that the U.S. won't offer Moscow economic relief until it ends the war against Ukraine, according to a source familiar with the talks. Anton Siluanov began introducing potential areas of cooperation but was forcefully interrupted by Bessent: "Nothing is possible until the war is over."
