I don’t think people understand how insane Mario Lemieux's 1992-93 season was. It could be the greatest feat by any athlete in professional sports.
Lemieux:
-Scored 69 goals
-Tallied 160 Points
-Won the Hart, Art Ross, Bill Masterton, and the Lester B Pearson award
-First Team All-Star
-Led the Penguins to the 1 seed.
-Flyers fans gave him a standing ovation in his return.
-Cleared the second leading player in scoring (Pat LaFontaine) by 12 points
With his 2.66ppg he was well on his way to challenge Gretzkys point and goals record for a season, on pace for around 218 points and 94 goals if he played the full season.
He did all of this despite missing two months during the season for treatment for Hodgkins Lymphom.
I can’t name many athletes who would be returning to play while battling cancer, never mind still being the most dominant player in the league by a landslide.
