Pakistanis are eating less and they are eating worse because they can no longer afford as much food. Data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) shows that over the past six years people across the urban and rural divide are consuming less food across all categories.

That means families are cutting back on the size of their rotis, the number of times meat is cooked in a month, how much milk is being given to their children, and even how many cups of tea they are drinking in a day.

The social indicators are staggering. The percentage of households categorised as “moderate to severely food insecure” in Pakistan has gone from 15.92 percent in 2019 to 24.35 percent in 2025. Severe food insecurity has also gone from 2.37% of households to 5.04% of households in the past six years. That means more than a quarter of Pakistani households face some form of hunger and malnutrition.

None of this is because we don’t have enough food. Pakistan grows its own wheat and rice. We are some of the largest producers of poultry, eggs, and milk and we even have a modest but growing meat export sector. The problem is affordability.

1940年5月6日，一个少女被日军扒光衣服，用铁钉把她的四肢钉在城墙上示众，鲜血不断滴落，周围的百姓无不落泪。

她就是抗日女英雄杨岭梅，出生于1921年，是晋县南田村人一个贫苦农家的孩子，父亲杨洛伍是一个教书先生，耳濡目染下，知道很多古代女英雄的事迹，从小就立志向她们学习。

父亲虽然是个教书先生，可是那个年月，也只能一边教书一边务农才能不至于饿肚子，童年的杨凌梅虽然穷，但是很快乐，可是动荡的时局让她们一家生活越发艰难。看着为了维持生计不得已去地主家打长工的哥哥因繁重的工作而导致身体病怏怏的，看到同村的地主家的孩子从小就不缺吃喝，而自己的家人每天为了一口饭而没日没夜的工作。这时的杨岭梅便在心里发誓：一定要让家里人过上好日子，不再受苦受累。

七七事变后，南田村建立了抗日根据地，是六区区委活动中心，而杨岭梅经常能听到抗日干部那激情高昂的宣传，听到那抗日救国，翻身解放的目标，在她的小小心里泛起了大大的波澜。随后便向抗日干部表达了想参加抗战救国的想法，而干部见她是个有志气的小姑娘，便同意了她的申请，就这样，17岁的杨岭梅就这样走上了革命的道路。此时的杨岭梅加入到妇救会，跟随妇救会的同志积极参加抗日宣传活动，还利用晚上参加了妇女识字班，她性格外向泼辣但为人忠厚，组织能力强，很快就做了六区妇救会的秘书当了干部。而杨岭梅因工作十分出色，在通过党组织的考察后，顺利的加入了中国共产党。

之后她更加积极的投入到抗日工作中，发动妇女给八路军做衣服鞋子，她还带领妇女们站岗放哨，在她的带领下，村子里的年轻男性都参加了抗日游击队，她的父亲还把家里最好的房子腾出来给八路军做备服厂，可是他们的抗日活动很快就被汉奸发现。1940年4月30日凌晨，日伪军在汉奸刘怀庆的带领下偷偷摸进了村子，县区干部和游击队战士发现敌人后，从村东北角突围出去，杨岭梅听到枪声后，第一时间把妇女救会的干部崔军藏了起来，然后她冒着生命危险去家里烧毁文件，可当她烧完文件刚要跑出去时，就被鬼子抓了，鬼子看到他家里的被服和生产工具，确定她就是八路军，于是把他全家也都抓了起来。

随后鬼子把村民赶到一处，让村民跪在地上，汉奸刘怀庆当场指认出14名抗日干部，他们被日军当场杀害，杨岭梅和另外33名干部被鬼子带走，这就是著名的南田村惨案。在日军监狱中，杨岭梅被严刑拷打，年仅19岁的她被鬼子折磨了6天六夜，期间，日军宪兵队队长亲自对她用刑，火烧，鞭打，烙铁烫，但她用柔弱的身体扛下了鬼子一次又一次的折磨。

盛怒之下的日军放出狼狗去撕咬杨岭梅，咬破了她的身体，咬断了她的手脚。日军用了几十种酷刑来折磨杨岭梅，可是杨岭梅始终没有透露半句情报。

最后日军把除她之外的男同志都当着她的面杀害了，他们想以此震慑杨岭梅，可杨岭梅始终坚贞不屈。5月6日，无计可施的日军用铁钉把他钉在了城墙上，她的鲜血流了一地，周围百姓无不落泪，这天杨岭梅壮烈牺牲，年仅19岁。

而随着抗战的胜利，便开始了给汉奸的清算，当时参与杀害杨岭梅烈士的汉奸除了死的一个也没跑掉，其中就包括刘怀庆，被人民政府枪决。

🇺🇸🇵🇰 A man from the US flew to Pakistan and paid $4,000 to free a family that had been enslaved for 140 years.

The family's bondage started in the 1880s when an ancestor took out a small loan. Under Pakistan's "peshgi" system, kiln owners issue advances to workers. Then manipulate accounts, add interest and arbitrary fines, and declare the debt a family obligation passed to children and grandchildren.

Kids as young as 4 or 5 work to help "repay" it. The math is designed to never reach zero.

Pakistan banned bonded labour in 1992. Estimates suggest hundreds of thousands remain trapped across the country's 20,000+ brick kilns.

Enforcement is nearly nonexistent. Kiln owners have political connections, police frequently collude, and families who try to leave face armed guards, false arrests, or violence against relatives left behind.
