“White nationalist” critiques of Russia coming from the US are always baffling to me. If one applied US census racial categorization to the Russian Federation, it would be ~95% White, ~4% Asian. Despite being home to millions of members of various indigenous ethnicities (again, the absolute majority of which are considered “white” in the US) with whom we've been sharing our country for many centuries, Russia is more ethnically Russian than England is English. This entire category of discourse is just absolute cope, on par with “Russians don't have running water”.

Natives need to bear firmly in mind that if the demographics of this nation wildly vary from the traditional white majority, it won't be some great development for us.

It will be the opposite. We share a history with the whites, good and bad, but it's behind us now. The whites like and admire us, and as little as some of us want to admit it, they have helped us enormously.

The newcomers don't give a damn about us. We have no history with Pakistanis or Afghans or whoever. They are coming to conquer, that's it.

Norwegowie nie wstydzą się własnej historii. Nie udają, że wikingowie to „obciach”, „przaśność” albo „niepotrzebne grzebanie w przeszłości”. Robią z tego element tożsamości, promocji i soft power.

A teraz wyobraźmy sobie polską kadrę w średniowiecznych zbrojach, przy chorągwiach spod Grunwaldu albo w husarskiej stylizacji przed wielką imprezą.

Nie wiem czy w Norwegii jest taka dyskusja, ale u nas podobna sesja pewnie od razu wywołałaby pytania: czy to nie przesada, czy nie za dużo patosu, czy sport powinien sięgać po historyczne symbole i czy nie lepiej zrobić czegoś bardziej „neutralnego”. Przodowaliby zapewne zwolennicy martyrologicznych dziejów Polski.

I właśnie tu widać ciekawą różnicę. Norwegowie potrafią potraktować własną historię jako atrakcyjny kod kulturowy: coś, co buduje klimat, rozpoznawalność i emocje.
