The Crown Must Draw the Line: Strip the Sussexes of Their Titles

The British monarchy is not a family brand & it is not a hereditary celebrity franchise. It is a constitutional institution. Its titles exist inside the system surrounding the Crown. When people permanently leave that system & keep using the titles conferred through it, the institution has a problem it cannot leave unresolved. That is why the Duke & Duchess of Sussex titles, and the princely styles attached to their children, should be removed and the official connection severed.

Royal titles are not private decorations. The Dukedom of Sussex was created by Letters Patent in 2018 and conferred on Harry. The 1917 Letters Patent set the rules under which certain descendants of the Sovereign hold the style of Prince or Princess. Those rules now produce a contradiction: members of the Royal House have withdrawn from royal duties, built an independent public & commercial identity around their royal status, & still keep the titles. The honour no longer describes a function. It describes the absence of one.

This is not a family quarrel. It is an institutional problem. A constitutional monarchy survives by keeping a bright line between those who represent the Crown & those who do not. Blur that line & two things follow. The public cannot tell where official association ends & private enterprise begins. The institution becomes responsible, in the public mind, for conduct it neither directs nor can restrain. Titles that travel with people who have left royal work still carry the residual authority of the Crown. That association is then spent in markets and media the Palace does not control. The Crown cannot treat the titles as private while the public continues to read them as royal.

The children make the same problem sharper. Their princely styles became available when their grandfather became King. That is what the Letters Patent produced. It does not follow that those styles should remain in force once the immediate family has established itself outside the working institution. Archie & Lili remain in the line of succession & carry the styles of Prince & Princess while their parents hold no official role. That is royal status without institutional responsibility. It should end.

Precedent already exists. In 2025 the King used Letters Patent to remove the style of Prince & the attribute of Royal Highness from his brother, & the Dukedom of York was struck from the Roll of the Peerage. Royal styles can be altered through the Crown’s prerogative. Hereditary peerages can be dealt with by Parliament. Parliament has done it before, including under the Titles Deprivation Act 1917. The legal route for the Sussex titles may differ in form. The claim that nothing can be done is false.

The King should remove the remaining royal styles & the princely styles from the Sussex children. Parliament should extinguish the Sussex peerage. The Sussexes should hold no official connection to the Crown of any kind: no patronages, no military appointments, no ceremonial functions, no official residences, no privileges arising from royal rank. Private family contact is a matter for the monarch. Official connection is not.

Delay does not preserve dignity. It preserves an anomaly. Every year the titles remain in use while the holders live as private people, the Crown teaches that royal honours can be detached from the institution that gives them meaning. That weakens the next generation of working royals, who will be asked to accept constraint & scrutiny while royal status remains available as an independent brand.

A monarchy that cannot enforce the meaning of its own titles will weaken the authority those titles were meant to support. The institution is larger than any one couple. Removing the titles and cutting the official link is not punishment. It is the restoration of the boundary: those who belong to the constitutional institution must be distinguishable from those who have left it.
