EMANCIPATION DAY
186 years today since Slavery legally ended in #Jamaica. Our African forefathers were ‘emancipated’ from bondage, and simultaneously, some may generously argue, our European slave-owners were ‘emancipated' from the cruel sin of owning their fellow human beings.
If history has taught us anything, a fundamental lesson is that Emancipation is not an event, it is a process. To this day, it remains a work in progress because we have not done sufficient work, individually and collectively, to make our Nation truly free.
Yes, we have many achievements to be proud of but freedom has to be much more than license to do whatever one wants. Too many of us surrender independence of thought, avoid personal responsibility, are casually violent, lack respect, and discriminate against ‘others’. We mistake bluster and bravado for confidence and strength. We are not diligent in our learning in an age when knowledge is most accessible, and remains the key to unlocking our true potential.
Our Nation’s history should be the solid foundation for our growth, if only we troubled ourselves to study and understand it.
Full Emancipation may be an unrealistic dream, but the more we approximate it, the closer to greatness Jamaica will be. Small dreams do not inspire, and I stand with Marcus Garvey, who said 'Lift up yourselves men! Take yourselves out of the mire and hitch your hopes to the very stars themselves.'
So enjoy your holiday my friends, refresh yourselves, and commit to fulfilling the promise and potential of full Emancipation. #EmancipationDay
With the Knicks acquiring Bojan Bogdanovic (averaging 20.2 points per game and 41.5% from 3-point range) and Alec Burks (averaging 12.7 points per game and 40.1% from 3-point range), I think they have a real shot of playing not just in the Eastern Conference Finals, but the NBA Finals!
