Ahead of this year’s International Workers' Day on May 1st, WIJAFRICA embarked on a four-month study to examine the working conditions of journalists across Nigeria.
What we found is difficult to ignore.
Across the country, poor welfare conditions remain widespread in Nigeria’s media industry, and women journalists are disproportionately affected.
Through interviews with 170 journalists across 50 media organisations in 19 states, a consistent pattern emerged: delayed salaries, non-payment of wages, extremely low remuneration, absence of salary reviews, non-remittance of pensions, and unpaid gratuities and retirement benefits. These are not isolated cases. They are systemic, cutting across both private and state-owned media organisations.
Many journalists described a profession where workers are expected to continue showing up, reporting, producing and broadcasting—even when they have not been paid for months. In several organisations, staff reported being owed between four and twelve months’ salary at different times. In more severe cases, arrears exceeded one year.
For women journalists, the impact is even more profound.
Several respondents spoke about humiliation, financial distress and burnout. Many described having to rely on personal appeals—to friends, former colleagues, government officials and private sector contacts just to meet basic obligations such as rent, school fees and hospital bills. These are not exceptional situations; they are recurring realities.
Importantly, this is not just a problem affecting young entrants into the profession. The average experience level of journalists interviewed was approximately 15 years. These findings reflect the realities of mid-level and senior professionals who have spent over a decade in the industry.
Across almost all respondents, the cost of accommodation emerged as the single most pressing financial challenge. For those with families, school fees followed closely behind. Many described a cycle where rent deadlines trigger financial crises, forcing them into emergency survival mode.
Nearly every journalist we spoke to admitted that, at some point, they had resorted to personal solicitation to meet financial needs. This includes "honorariums" and "gifts" before or after stories were written, remittances from relatives abroad, freelance work, support from former colleagues who have moved into corporate roles, and high-interest loans from digital lending platforms.
The source material for this report is drawn from current and former journalists, editors, camera operators and newsroom staff across Nigeria. Over a four-month period (January to April 2026), WIJAFRICA conducted extensive phone interviews, physical meetings and private conversations to document these experiences.
The organisations represented span print, television, radio and digital media, including Leadership, Punch, Daily Independent, TVC, MITV, Channels Television, Arise News, Premium Times, Nairametrics, THISDAY, Vanguard, The Guardian, Daily Trust, Silverbird, Soundcity, BBC, New Telegraph, RSTV Port Harcourt, DITV Kaduna, ITV Benin, Delta Broadcasting Service (Asaba), CoolWazobiaInfo, BeatClassicNaija FM, Brilla FM, BusinessDay, TechCabal, CORE TV, Galaxy TV, Kaftan TV and several others across multiple states.
Most respondents asked to remain anonymous.
Some declined to participate entirely.
A number of journalists who initially agreed to speak later reached out to withdraw their contributions. Their reason was fear of being identified based on specific information provided.
Calls and messages to the National President of the NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdul were unanswered. The 10-page report can be read on https://t.co/clFO46OQqV
