The slow death of informational websites is going to create a very interesting problem for Google, because once enough publishers realise there is no point spending hours researching, writing and updating useful articles that Google simply summarizes above their links, many will eventually stop producing that information altogether.

Then the obvious question becomes uncomfortable, because if independent websites stop writing guides, explanations, comparisons, reviews and niche knowledge, where exactly will Google keep getting the fresh information it needs to answer everybody else?

Google may be winning the short game by keeping users on its own pages, but if it destroys the economic reason for people to keep publishing useful information, it could eventually discover that search engines still need somebody somewhere to actually create the knowledge first.
