Imagine you're a kid growing up in 1910. You happen to live next door to a doctor. Are you more likely to become a doctor by 1940 than your friend Carl, who lives 5 doors down? Our new paper suggests that yes, by about 30%!

I recently received a paper on the Ottoman Elections of 1918 at Explorations . . . but it turns out there were no such elections!
It turns out that the paper was an elaborate fraud. The author rewrote an excellent JCE paper on the industrialization and the Russian Revolution. They put it through AI to rewrite the text but they kept everything else the same. So there are regressions with "distance to petrograd" and "distance to Moscow" in them.
The maps they produce have the geo-coordinates of Russia, not the Ottoman Empire.

12 Angry Men filmi gibi bir film çekmek isteyen varsa Abdulhamitin hal fetvasının yazılması, imzalanması, açıklanması sırasında geçen tartışmaları konu edebilir.
:)
Hal’ kararı reye sunulmuş ve bazı hocalar ayağa kalkmamış. Bunun üzerine Talat paşa sert bir bakış atınca hocalar derhal ayağa kalkmış.
Ayan tarafından da ayağa kalkmayanlar olunca Said Paşa Talat Paşa’nın kulağına eğilerek:
“Efendim, biraz da bu tarafa bakınız!”
demiş.
Mark Carney, "In the heart of Germany, above Weimar, there is a wooded ridge called Ettusberg. And for decades, Goethe walked, thought, and wrote there. An oak on that ridge came to bear his name, a living monument to the highest ideals of European culture"
"As the 20th century turned dark, that same oak became trapped behind the barbed wire of Buchenwald. A silent witness to humanity's deepest moral failure. Goethe understood that ideals must be fought for, that values do not defend themselves."
"Indeed, at the end of Faust, the old man's last vision is of a free people on free ground. Nödvg, Värdjän, Siegfreiheit. Wie das Leben, de taklik si eroban mus"
"Freedom and life must be earned every single day"
"Every day"
"Every day, not once in 1945 or 1956 or 1989. Every day, including this one."
My take: 1945, 1956 and 1989 are not distant history lessons: they mark Europe’s liberation from fascism, Hungary’s uprising against Soviet rule, and the fall of the Iron Curtain. Carney’s point is that freedom is never something Europe simply achieved and banked forever - it is a choice, a responsibility and, when necessary, a struggle renewed by every generation.
I've been working on Anthropic Economic Index for a while and to extend its use I created this https://t.co/xQqzTPvQS5 project.

Do you know what a "zombie citation" is?
You remember Aidan Toner-Rodgers, right?
In May 2025, MIT publicly disowned his viral AI paper over fabricated data, and arXiv withdrew it.
You’d think that was the end of story.
Instead, the ghost lives on: the paper now has 110 total citations with 31 in 2026 alone. That includes journals under Nature, Cell, and Elsevier publications.
Because nobody (authors+reviewers) checks what they reads :)
