Day 7: Strengthen the chain 🔗
This week: the first hour, the myths, the mother’s plate, fathers and family, rights at work, food after six months. We started at 29% exclusive breastfeeding, with early initiation down from 42% to 36% (NDHS 2023–24, UNICEF Nigeria).
Today, take the pledge:
”I will support breastfeeding in my home, my workplace, or my community, and stand with nursing mothers.”
Sign it in our bio, then nominate two people to do the same. 💚
Teach. Amplify. Sustain.

Day 6: After six months 🥣
Six months is a milestone. Time to add food, but breastfeeding doesn’t stop, until two years.
Why six months? Before that, a baby’s gut and kidneys aren’t ready, and breast milk alone covers everything. After six months, milk alone is no longer enough

Move through texture in three stages: smooth and soft at 6 months, mashed and lumpy by 8–9 months, soft family food by 12 months. Be patient, and keep offering.
And don’t stop the breast milk, it still supplies energy, protein, and protection all the way to two years and beyond
For employers this is cheap to get right. A clean private corner. A chair. Predictable breaks. Somewhere cool to store expressed milk.

But only 12 of Nigeria's 36 states plus the FCT currently offer paid maternity leave of up to six months (UNICEF Nigeria, 2025).
And it's not just office workers. Market women and traders count too, you may not have an HR department, but you still have a right to feed.

Day 5: Room to feed 🚪
Going back to work doesn’t have to mean the end of breastfeeding.
The Nigerian Labour Act already backs maternity leave, part pay during that leave, and paid nursing breaks on return. On resumption, a nursing mother is entitled to two paid breaks a day.

Day 4: Fathers and family 👨👩👧
Fathers can’t breastfeed. But they still decide whether it works.
Family attitudes are one of the strongest predictors of whether exclusive breastfeeding survives past the first weeks, your word carries more weight than any poster.
