Istanbul’s street cats are more than just strays; they are a revered cultural legacy. Locals provide round-the-clock care, including food, medical attention, and insulated shelters built into the city’s streets. 🇹🇷

During the Ottoman Empire, cats were valued for controlling rodents in wooden neighborhoods. Special caretakers known as mancacı were hired to feed street animals using public funds.

Today, over 125,000 cats roam freely, frequently welcomed in cafes, mosques, subways, and ferries. Many neighborhoods even boast local cat mascots, such as the famous Tombili in the Kadıköy district, immortalized with a bronze statue after going viral for her relaxed pose.

The city's unique relationship with these animals is celebrated globally, most notably in the acclaimed documentary Kedi and the newer Cat Museum, which highlights the extensive history and bond between humans and cats in Turkey.
