Jageshwar Prasad Awadhiya, 83.

In 1986, he was accused of taking a bribe of 100 rupees while working as a bill assistant in MP Roadways. He always maintained his innocence.

After 39 years of legal battle, the Chhattisgarh High Court acquitted him. He is free now, but is this justice when the process itself became harsher than the charge?

He was suspended from 1988 to 1994, then transferred. He worked on half salary, with no promotions or increments. His children’s education suffered; his wife, under constant stress, passed away. “I was known for honesty… but everything was destroyed,” he says. Even after retirement, he was denied pension. To survive, he worked as a school guard and did odd jobs. Court hearings consumed both his youth and old age.

Now, he says he has no strength to fight another case against the state govt for his pending dues and pensions. He only requests some money to repair his house.

This is the same country where a Chief Justice left a Bharatanatyam performance multiple times to ensure a bench is urgently formed for Teesta Setalvad’s bail hearing, and where the court opened at night to save a terrorist from the noose.

Your annual reminder that satya, ahinsa, satyagrah had no role in Britain’s decision to free India. The real reasons:

1. WWII left Britain bankrupt, owing huge debts, making colonial administration too costly.

2. That debt was mostly from the US, which opposed old-style imperialism via the Atlantic Charter (1941) and pressured the UK to decolonize.

3. The Labour Party came to power in 1945 in the UK. It was openly anti-imperialist, seeing the empire as a burden and focusing on building the welfare state instead of maintaining colonial rule.

4. The western world was seeing a rise of anti-colonial sentiments. WWII’s rhetoric of freedom and democracy clashed with imperial rule; colonialism was increasingly seen as hypocritical and illegitimate globally.

5. The United Nations came into existence, and its 1945 Charter encouraged self-government; Britain faced international scrutiny and moral pressure to grant independence.

6. The rise of armed nationalist movements in colonies like India and Palestine made governance costly and unstable. The British army was overstretched, under-equipped, and war-weary, unable to manage widespread armed insurgencies.

As a result, Britain freed over 60 colonies after WWII, usually based on their economic value and the resources needed to control them. Only one of these had satya, ahinsa, satyagrah. If that really worked, India would have been free decades earlier; Gandhi had been waving that banner for years, and the British didn’t budge until they were broke and exhausted.

So the idea that dedi hame aazadi bina khadag bina dhaal is is simply not true.

The same country that supported India during the Kargil war. Who gave us UAVs that procured live in time intelligence that saved the lives of our Indian soldiers. Who provided us with laser guided bombs and critical components for our Mirage jets. For the country that trained us in counter terrorism and surveillance after 2008 Mumbai attacks. The same country that revolutionised irrigation in our country and helped countless farmers with drip irrigation that puts food on our tables . Who came to help us during Covid Pandemic with medical equipment and tech. Who has collaborated with us to build cutting edge Defense systems to protect our people from China and Pakistan. AI robotics cyber terrorism technology the list goes on.
How useful are the Heron TP drones on LOC in Ladakh and the Harop drones in the Balakot strikes. The Python 5 & Derby air missiles and Spice 2000 bombs helped to specifically target terrorists and prevent civilian casualties on both sides. It was the Israelis who helped jam Pakistani radar systems which is why we got past their systems and protected our men. And in their hour of need when their women were raped and children kidnapped you have not one word of concern! Ingrate.
How desperate you have become for power that you will mislead your countrymen without balance or nuance and Incite hatred against the Jews and the Jewish nation and potentially damage a relationship that helps India. Nobody wishes to see Palestine suffer and my heart goes out to them but your words do not bring anyone closer to a peace of any substance. They create hate and imbalanced views.
