🚨 Sergio Agüero on Lionel Messi after the passing of his father Jorge:
🗣“When I got the news, I broke down. I’ve never felt something like this before. I’ve never lost someone this close to me. Jorge was one of the greatest men I’ve ever known. He had such a huge influence on Leo, and I know this is going to take a massive toll on him.
I called Leo after it happened, and I’ve never heard him this down before. It was the most emotional I’ve ever heard him. You could hear the pain in his voice.
What makes it even harder is that before Jorge’s passing, the world media, especially in England, were portraying Leo as some arrogant person without knowing even a fraction of what he was going through privately. It was truly despicable. The media is always so quick to judge someone without knowing what is happening behind the scenes.
It hasn’t been easy for Leo lately. He had the heartbreak of the World Cup final, and now, just weeks later, he has lost his father. That’s not easy for anyone to go through. He’s human before he’s a footballer.
During and even before the World Cup, Leo was already going through a difficult period. Whenever I spoke with him, he didn’t seem happy. He wasn’t able to be as close to his dad as he wanted when he needed him the most, and then having to return to the MLS season without properly spending time with his family made everything even harder.
I think that’s what made Leo even more emotional. He’s been carrying a lot more than people realise, and sometimes people forget there’s a human being behind the footballer.”
