In 2022-2023, Google killed many of their own products:
Google Duo
Google Hangouts
Google Domains
Google Podcasts
YouTube Originals
YouTube Go
Google Chrome Apps
G Suite
Google Surveys
and many more to list.
I have tried at-least 50% of the above and I thought they were quite useful and could scale (Example. Google Duo could have been the Android's answer to Apple's Facetime). But the pace at which Google kills some of their own products is the testament to their high benchmark of "meaningful scale".
If the product doesn't have the potential to get to a billion users, or potentially billions of dollars in revenue, Google makes the decision to scrap it even if the product had ~50M users on it. 50M users could be a lot for many other companies, but for Google this was "decimal adjustment" and doesn't harm them too much to kill it.
If you stay long enough with unsuccessful bets or sub-scale bets, they may seem harmless at first but they are always taking away time and effort from your most important people and resources.
Takeaways from Google's Graveyard of products:
1. Killing products is as important as launching new products. Remember that 'what you do not kill' is taking away resources from 'what you could launch and win'
2. Find your 'meaningful scale' benchmark- what is your 'decimal adjustment' that you're willing to let go in favor of meaningful scale?
