In one of the most heinous crimes committed during World War II, Japanese occupation forces carried out germ warfare that killed tens of thousands of Chinese civilians. At the heart of the program was the notorious Japanese Army Unit 731, a top-secret biological and chemical warfare research base established in Harbin in the 1930s. The unit experimented on living men, women and children, deliberately exposing them to diseases, testing biological and other weapons on them, and routinely mutilating them. As a result, Unit 731 developed weapons that were used by Japan in its biological warfare against China and Southeast Asia during WWII.
