There was a fire in our building yesterday.
Our floor’s fire alarm did not go off. None of our apartment’s smoke alarms went off. No PA system. We just woke up to the smell of smoke.
Fire didn’t reach us, but the smoke did. (1/7)

My husband, our 4 cats, and I were trapped in our master bedroom for 4 hours, unable to navigate the thick, acrid smoke to get to the fire exits.
The smoke was thickest on the top floor, where our friends lived. Husband and wife, their 17-year old son, their helper. (2/7)
Willow passed away last night due to complications from smoke inhalation. Her family is still in the ICU. 😔
Willow, when I held you as you wandered into the medic area in a daze, I didn’t think it would be the last time I’d ever see you. You didn’t deserve this kind of death.
@seraphicreader It really was terrifying. There was a moment where I just clung to my husband’s arm, trembling as the fear sunk in. Feeling that way in your own home is so fucked up. Thank you for empathizing.

@nifafafaa Thank you, Nifa! 🫂 Unfortunately I just got word from my friend’s sister that he (the husband I mentioned) might already have brain damage. 😔 We’re working together to try and put together a lawsuit now. This is absolutely insane.
@smyn___ Thank you, simmy. 🫂 I just got word that one of our friends likely has brain damage. He may recover, but he will likely never be the same.
I’m in talks now for putting together a class action lawsuit against those who need to be held accountable.
Regulating my emotions is exhausting. When I think of my friends in the ICU, I break down. When I think of the financial loss and the loss of all the treasured sentimental items we own, I break down. When I think of how all of this could have been prevented, I break down. (6/7)
What pisses me off most is that this shouldn’t have happened.
Fire should have been dealt with faster.
All the alarms should have worked. Evacuation should have been done sooner.
Hundreds of residents and the many rescuers and volunteers suffered due to gross negligence. (5/7)
Our building has not been declared safe yet, so we have yet to assess the smoke damage.
Usually, smoke damage means throwing away everything exposed and porous. So that would mean things like bedding, clothes, books and other paper goods, plushies, and so on. (4/7)
