Many will not know this quiet unassuming man, but this is Captain (Retd) Dave Clegg MBE. He’s recently retired from the Civil Service after a service career spanning 61 years both military and civil.
His extensive career which started in 1963 when he joined the Royal Engineers is nothing short of exceptional. Promoted through the enlisted ranks from Sapper to Captain he is a true innovator with a plethora of capability innovations and designs to his name.
There are many, but some of these include:
⚙️ Designer and developer of the Willich Chieftain AVRE.
⚙️ Designed “wedges” (Clegg Wedge) used in conjunction with close support bridges to allow over-bridging of pipe lines or weak road surfaces and enhanced combination bridging options.
⚙️ Designed rubber toe pads for close support bridges which mitigated metal-on-metal contact during combination bridging.
⚙️ Designed pendulum markers to aid armoured vehicles maintaining a center line whilst trafficking military bridges under armour.
⚙️ Designed load spreaders for the toes of the military bridges to prevent toes sinking into loose sand.
⚙️Designed improvements to mineploughs to operate in loose sandy conditions.
⚙️ Developer of software used for bridge design, maintenance, and inspections,
These are just a few of the tangible developments and designs credited to Dave Clegg, the first of which saw him awarded the MBE in 1987.
“This is the largest capability improvement project the Corps has undertaken since 1945”
[Maj Gen CJ Rougier CB, EinC (A)]
His mentoring and guidance to many generations of Armoured Engineers training at Bovington, Dorset has been immeasurable and invaluable. He is an inspiration to every Armoured Engineer and he has personally inspired my own career in the Corps and my own ideas and innovations of which several have been brought into service, I consider him a true friend and mentor.
I do not say this lightly when I state that Capt Dave Clegg’s work in armoured engineering and innovation has been the most valuable contribution to capability development in the Royal Engineers since Major General Sir Percy Hobart’s “Funnies” innovations prior to Operation Overlord in 1944.
I’m sure he will be sorely missed on the corridors of the Combat Support Wing (formally the RE Wing). I would like to take this opportunity to wish Dave Clegg a happy retirement and a long life, you’ve certainly deserved it.
Godspeed. 🫶🏻

@Seldom_Seen_3 @ric_cole @af_candid@DefenceHQ It’s a real privilege to have been asked to support @af_candid as the Armed Forces Champion. Looking forward to meeting more of the network.
A compassionate, modest and unbelievably courageous man. Full of fun and adventure he also shared with us his dreadful taste in music and tendency to make up words at #Scrabble! We will never forget him.
