As the poverty of governance affects the quality of democracy in Africa, its imperative that the idea of the Electoral college can no longer remain domiciled in Nigeria alone. The successful strides made in Nigeria, though still in its infant stages, can spread across borders
Nigeria’s future depends on informed and active citizens.

DEMOCRACY DAY MESSAGE
Today, we celebrate not just the survival of democracy in Nigeria, but the power of informed and active citizenship.
Democracy is strongest when citizens understand the Constitution, engage in governance, and hold leaders accountable. The future of our nation depends not on spectators, but on citizens who participate, question, and contribute.
As we mark this Democracy Day, let us recommit ourselves to the values of civic responsibility, national unity, and good governance.
Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.

SEVEN YEARS OF BUILDING POLITICAL LITERACY IN NIGERIA
Today marks seven years of the Electoral College Nigeria.
What began as a vision to confront political illiteracy has grown into a nationally rooted and internationally recognised movement dedicated to advancing political literacy, constitutional awareness, democratic values, and responsible citizenship across Nigeria.
Over the past seven years, we have received more than 50,000 registrations and successfully trained and graduated over 16,000 Nigerians through structured learning programmes, debates, governance dialogues, media engagements, and civic education initiatives. From communities to institutions, our work has remained focused on strengthening citizens’ understanding of politics and governance.
We are honoured that our work has been acknowledged both locally and internationally, a recognition that reinforces the urgency and relevance of civic education in sustaining democracy.
We remain deeply grateful to our partners, including Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development @CJIDAfrica
, Embassy of Sweden in Nigeria @SwedeninNigeria , National Endowment for Democracy @NEDemocracy , Centre for Fiscal Transparency @FTransparencyNG , Pop Central TV @popcentraltv and the Cable @thecableng as well as many other institutions, collaborators, and individuals who continue to believe in this mission.
However, while we mark this seventh anniversary, we do so with a heavy sense of responsibility to the present realities of our country. Due to the current state of insecurity and in deep concern for the children and families affected particularly the children still in captivity, we have chosen to acknowledge this milestone without proceeding with planned celebratory activities.
Our commitment to Nigeria remains unchanged. But in moments like this, reflection must take precedence over celebration.
As we move forward, we reaffirm our dedication to building a more informed citizenry, strengthening democratic culture, and advocating for a Nigeria where safety, dignity, and justice are not privileges, but guarantees.
Seven years on, the mission continues with greater urgency, deeper resolve, and renewed responsibility.
For the love of country
@kunlelawal
Executive Director
Electoral College Nigeria
KUNLE LAWAL: "The conclusion of party primaries across Nigeria should ordinarily represent a triumph of democracy within our political parties. Primaries are designed to be the first and perhaps most important test of democratic culture. They are meant to showcase the ability of political parties to organise themselves, manage competition, resolve disputes, and ultimately present credible candidates to the electorate. Instead, the just-concluded primaries have exposed a deeper and more troubling reality: they are not merely episodes of political disagreement, but compelling evidence of the systemic failure of party institutionalisation in Nigeria. Far from demonstrating organisational maturity, the process revealed parties that remain heavily dependent on powerful individuals, informal arrangements, and ad hoc decision-making rather than stable rules, credible structures, and democratic norms. The recurring controversies surrounding the primaries are therefore not isolated incidents; they are symptoms of a broader institutional crisis at the heart of Nigeria’s democratic system."

we are reminded of the power of renewal, sacrifice, and hope. It is a season that calls us to reflect, to extend kindness
May this time inspire compassion, strengthen our bonds with one another, and fill our hearts with peace and gratitude.
Campaign financing is shaping outcomes more than competence. When politics becomes too expensive, we don’t filter out bad candidates, we price out good ones
Transparency is not optional. Voters must ask not just who is running, but who is funding them and why
#Electoralcollng
KUNLE LAWAL: "At this point in Nigeria’s political evolution, the price of nomination forms has moved beyond being merely expensive. It has become a structural barrier to entry, one that quietly but effectively determines who gets to participate in the democratic process and who is shut out before the race even begins. What should be an administrative requirement has transformed into a financial gauntlet. And in doing so, it raises a fundamental question about the quality of leadership a system like this is likely to produce. When decent, capable, and reform-minded individuals are priced out of politics, the system should not feign surprise when less scrupulous actors find their way in. Nature abhors a vacuum, and politics is no exception. If integrity cannot afford to show up, opportunism will always step in to fill the space."

Did you know Nigeria has a National Ethics and Integrity Policy?
Designed to fight corruption, promote national unity and accountability, the policy aims to change both systems and behaviours in governance.
But years after its introduction, a key question remains: is it making any real difference?
Join us at 6pm on Thursday as @kunlelawal explains the policy’s scope, its promises, the challenges,
and what it means for citizens and public institutions.

Political parties are more than campaign platforms. They recruit candidates, shape public policy, organise government, and connect citizens to power.
But how do they function beyond campaigns and elections?
How are parties formed?
Who controls them?
And how do they influence governance?
Join us at 5pm on Thursday as @ilivinus explains party structure, roles, and why they matter in Nigeria’s democracy.

To refer to the Nigerian Legislature as Parliament. This is wrong terminology because Parliamentarians have executive and legislative powers in a Republican System of Government. To find even our legislators make such errs is borderline shocking
