@Jbeech201@jared_shult Also if I were a parent, I’d want the money I pay in taxes to feed my own kids as well.
Why is that so hard for some people to comprehend?
@postbusters2k16 Also she clearly told some people given that someone had to prep the transports. We’re just locked in Poe’s perspective. So we obviously are led to feel like Holdo was being dishonest overall instead of just tight lipped with him and his friends specifically.
@VernonAndOn@VETERANx00@SkyRaiderG7 I mean it’s the girl he specifically likes and wants to protect. So still fairly self interested, especially when you consider him risking the entire Resistance on it. Like, if they didn’t figure out how to shut down the shields, the entire Resistance would be dead.
@VernonAndOn@VETERANx00@SkyRaiderG7 “I’m just here for Rey” is a direct line he says on Starkiller. He nuts up for his own self interest not for any greater cause.
@VernonAndOn@VETERANx00@SkyRaiderG7 Mmhm.
Hey if you cut Finn’s story, how does the FO find out about the plan to escape on transports, and when does he decide to join the Resistance fully?
@spliffkay@ghostband26 There's certainly a plot and events happening that lead to fights, but that's different from an actual story with arcs and a thematic through line. It's not a story. It's a sequence of things happening and there is a difference.
@MichaelSacal@WWEtriviaTO There’s a very wide game between racist tendencies and racist. Hal obviously doesn’t mean anything by it but he very much has an ignorance that comes with being an older white guy that means he tends to be insensitive.
Your inability to recognize nuance is not their fault.
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 Yes and we learn this not by his actions but by the story straight up having him say “I’m too happy to care about avenging you because of this cursed technique I’ve learned”
Again, not exactly winning any awards for intelligence in its writing.
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 You just, again, described every single Shonen protagonist.
And that’s fine, but this is why I’m so dubious about the claim that this series is “too smart for people”.
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 And I pointed out how little any of these personalities actually affect proceedings beyond surface level acknowledgement of personality.
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 “There was never going to be a massive dividing point”
Sounds like something a smart series would’ve done to make the narrative more interesting and better enhance the thematic clash between the characters. But alas.
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 But again, going back to the Dagon fight the only thing I learned about the heroes involved is that the old man has some crazy powers.
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 Yes but even in these types of stories if there’s nothing narratively going on in each fight beyond just a fight then it’s filler. It’s boring. If a villain is nothing but an obstacle use it as a means to develop our heroes!
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 And at the end of what I read the only thing I can confidently say about Yuji Itadori as a character is that…he’s a guy. He wants to get strong and save people. And…he doesn’t like curses…
Idk would be nice if the story cared more about the characters than the powers.
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 clear cut story and thematic through line.
It is nothing new but I just got way more out of it.
JJK just struck me as something that thinks it’s saying more than it is, and excuses it’s character’s lack of personality with lots of overly complicated power exposition dumps
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 My dude the most complex character is Gojo and the most depth he has is that he’s a good guy who has a tendency to be arrogant and haughty.
@kaizit29@Maybe4M4@ghostband26 Personality absolutely can amount to a lot in a good narrative. It defines what the characters do. One Piece Naruto and even Dragon Ball are stories driven entirely by the actions of characters which are driven by their personalities.
