@ryangrim Wish it were true but it was the continental congress that refused to acknowledge VT as an independent republic or a state of the US because both NY and NH had claims to its territory. VT founders played all cards to gain admittance to the US including flirting with the British.
@MarcoRosaire@ryangrim Sadly a bit of an overstatement/ misconception. The VT constitution officially banned slavery of adults but not children (🙄) and slavery persisted in Vermont until the 1830, even many founding fathers of VT were enslavers.
@vtlen@ryangrim Much more accurate. Love VT but sorry, we didn’t refuse to join the US in 1777, Congress refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of VT which was disputed territory of both NY and NH.
