@ryangrim Wish it were true but it was the continental congress that refused to acknowledge VT as an independent republic or a state of the US because both NY and NH had claims to its territory. VT founders played all cards to gain admittance to the US including flirting with the British.

@MarcoRosaire @ryangrim Sadly a bit of an overstatement/ misconception. The VT constitution officially banned slavery of adults but not children (🙄) and slavery persisted in Vermont until the 1830, even many founding fathers of VT were enslavers.
