Today at the Chamber of Deputies, under the leadership of @JESUSCUANALO, Co-Chair of the Mexican Caucus for Environmental Conservation, and with the support of ICCF Group and @ReforestamosMx, the Legislative Workshop on the Analysis and Development of a Strategy to Strengthen the Forestry Sector in Mexico was held.

Legislators, forest communities, government representatives from @SEMARNAT_mx and @CONAFOR, academia, the private sector, and civil society joined efforts to promote a comprehensive legislative agenda that recognizes forests as a strategic solution to national challenges such as food security, water availability, and public health.

Today, the National Congress of the Republic of Chile launched the Chilean Conservation and Oceans Caucus in Santiago. The ICCF Group welcomed the participation of Members of Congress, Co-Chairs of the Colombian and Mexican Caucuses, Ministries, private-sector entities, academia, multi-lateral banks, and non-governmental organizations. Chile is home to nearly 6,500 km of coastline with a wealth of 127 terrestrial and 96 marine ecosystems. With this launch, the Caucus commits to consensus building and policy action for conservation in Chile.

Tuvimos una reunión de trabajo con Eleonora Aranda y el equipo de International Conservation Caucus Foundation (ICCF), donde coincidimos en la importancia de impulsar acciones que fortalezcan la conservación marina y el desarrollo sostenible del sector pesquero.

Esta tarde asistí a la instalación del Caucus Subnacional de Conservación Ambiental y Océanos de Baja California Sur, impulsado por el diputado Erik Iván Agúndez, un espacio que fortalecerá la toma de decisiones en favor de nuestro entorno.

En este gobierno trabajamos para proteger la naturaleza, prevenir la contaminación y promover un desarrollo responsable que respete nuestra biodiversidad. Cuidar la tierra y el mar es una prioridad permanente.

Seguimos sumando esfuerzos con los tres órdenes de gobierno, el Congreso y la sociedad para preservar el patrimonio natural de Baja California Sur.

The Congress of Baja California Sur, with the support of ICCF Mexico, has launched the first subnational Environmental and Oceans Caucus in the world. This historic milestone strengthens the state’s environmental agenda by establishing a formal legislative platform to advance cross-cutting conservation policies with both short- and long-term vision.

Led by State Deputy Erick Iván Agúndez Cervantes as Founding Chair, the Caucus reflects a strong commitment from the State Congress to advancing evidence-based environmental policymaking. The launch was attended by the Governor of Baja California Sur, Prof. Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, along with representatives from the three branches of government, academia, local communities, and the private sector—demonstrating broad institutional support for strengthening local legislation by promoting environmental governance, advancing ecosystem restoration and circular economy approaches, supporting responsible fisheries and regenerative aquaculture, and integrating scientific rigor and transparency into public decision-making to safeguard Baja California Sur’s marine, coastal, and terrestrial ecosystems.

On November 24 and 25, the Mexican Oceans Caucus carried out its first field visit in La Paz to learn firsthand about exemplary community-led projects on the conservation and restoration of marine–coastal ecosystems, as well as initiatives on regenerative aquaculture, coral restoration, and the cultivation of Mexican pearls.

During the visit, members of the Caucus engaged in dialogue with the Guardianas del Conchalito, toured the Santomar facilities, and learned about the work of Efecto Arena—three initiatives that demonstrate that it is possible to conserve while generating social well-being, resilience, and a stronger local economy.

The delegation also participated in activities surrounding the arrival of the Statsraad Lehmkuhl tall ship of the One Ocean Expedition, aboard which the strategic pillars that will guide the work of the Mexican Oceans Caucus were presented.

This first visit marks the beginning of a collaborative path that will strengthen the country’s ocean governance, consolidate legislative leadership, and open opportunities to advance solutions grounded in science, political will, and innovation.

This multi-party platform brings together legislators united by a shared commitment to protect our oceans, seas, and coasts.

With the support of ICCF Mexico, the initiative aims to strengthen legislative cooperation, advance science-based policymaking, and promote a shared national agenda for the sustainable use and conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems.

Mexico Ratifies the BBNJ Treaty! The Mexican Senate has unanimously ratified the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), also known as the High Seas Treaty. With this ratification, the country reaffirms its commitment to ocean protection, multilateralism, and the future of marine life.

Special recognition goes to the Senators of the Mexican Caucus on Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development who actively contributed to the advancement of this Agreement: Alejandro Murat, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs; Ivideliza Reyes, Chair of the Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture; Karen Castrejón, Secretary of the Committee on Foreign Affairs; and Maki Ortiz, Chair of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.

IN SPANISH: ¡México ratifica el Tratado BBNJ! El Senado mexicano ha ratificado por unanimidad el Tratado sobre la Biodiversidad Más Allá de la Jurisdicción Nacional (BBNJ), también conocido como el Tratado de Altamar. Con esta ratificación, el país reafirma su compromiso con la protección del océano, el multilateralismo y el futuro de la vida marina.

IN SPANISH: En el marco del Día Mundial de la Tierra, las y los Senadores integrantes de la Comisión de Pesca y Acuacultura del Senado de la República, presidida por la Senadora Ivideliza Reyes Hernández, acordaron impulsar la reinstalación del Caucus de los Océanos Mexicanos durante la LXVI Legislatura.

En 2022, México se posicionó como el tercer país a nivel mundial en establecer un Caucus de este tipo. La continuidad de sus trabajos durante la presente legislatura representa una oportunidad clave para seguir avanzando en el fortalecimiento del marco legal sobre océanos sostenibles, en beneficio tanto de las personas como de la naturaleza.
