(Clemenceau)

Around 21,000 years ago, someone crossed the muddy shores of what is now White Sands National Park, carrying a toddler before returning hours later alone. Their 1.5 km journey left over 400 footprints behind-an ordinary moment that survived the Ice Age.
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
- George Orwell, 1984
I’ve now seen the Odyssey - My review:
TLDR: Nolan wounds Poseidon's son Homer and can’t help boasting about it and in return Poseidon makes his film as torturous as possible without outright killing it.
A thread 🧵
Victor Davis Hanson was blown away by the fact that the actress playing Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s new film had never actually read The Odyssey.
What confused him even more was that she began criticizing Homer’s epic for not having enough “feminist” characters, despite never having read it.
HANSON: “Lupita Nyong’o, she said something, I couldn’t quite believe that…she got her master’s in theater arts at Yale, and she said she had never read The Odyssey before.”
“And she’s 42…and I thought, well, how is that possible?”
“Her undergraduate institution…was excellent. She went to Yale, but she’s never…”
“I taught 21 years at Cal State Fresno, Humanities 10, Introduction to Western Humanities. We started with Homer, so I would either have The Iliad, but mostly I taught The Odyssey…”
“So I had 2,000 students at Cal State University taking that class, and most of them were from families below the median income…”
“My point is, they were not from old families and they weren’t at a privileged institution, and yet they had experience with The Odyssey…”
“So when I hear this actress and she says that she has never read it before, well, that’s okay.”
“But then she starts opining on what’s wrong with it, and she says that it doesn’t have enough ‘feminist’ characters.”
Relationship to the dead reveals the heart of a civilization.
In Nolan's Odyssey, the dead Sinon, a victim, reprimands Odysseus.
In Homer's Odyssey, the dead Achilles, a hero, redirects Odysseus.
In one world, the dead bequeath wisdom. In the other, grievances.
Homer's Odyssey: Hubris —> Nobody —> Memory —> Home
Nolan's Odyssey: Sin —> Memory —> Guilt —> Exile
In Homer, memory is restorative. Odysseus remembers who he is—recognizing his limitations—and reclaims his home. Memory generates civilization.
In Nolan, memory is condemnatory. Guilt severs him from his home. Memory judges and destroys civilization.
A depressingly modern reinterpretation.
Moana hired a full team of Polynesian consultants to police everything from tattoos to how the heroine addresses her elders. The Odyssey cast zero Greek or Mediterranean actors in a story that belongs to Greece.
One culture got a "Cultural Trust". The other got mocked for asking.
Why is Hollywood like this?
Le régime iranien serait soudainement moins fréquentable ?
Quelle surprise…
