William Arnold travelled around 1,700 miles from Cornwall to the remote Isle of Lewis in Scotland for one unusual reason. He wanted to make 52 phone calls from an old red telephone box.

The box at Eneclate is no ordinary kiosk. It is a rare double-door version of Britain's famous K6 phone box, designed to cope with the powerful winds of the Outer Hebrides. Only two are known to remain in their original locations, and this one still had a working phone.

Under rules governing BT payphones, making at least 52 calls within a 12-month period is one of the factors that can protect a phone from removal. So Arnold decided to give this one the usage it needed.

After raising money for the journey, he travelled north and reached the box in August 2026. With winds around 45 mph and rain blowing outside, he stood inside and worked through the calls.

It took roughly two hours and cost him about £36. Many calls went to people who had supported his journey, while some even called the phone box back.

Arnold's interest in Britain's disappearing payphones began in 2022 after he tried to use one during a photography trip and discovered the line was dead. Since then, he has documented working kiosks and tried to draw attention to their disappearance, especially in rural places where mobile coverage can still be unreliable.

Around 9,000 public payphones remain operational across the UK, according to BT, down from roughly 20,000 just two years earlier.

For Arnold, travelling 1,700 miles to make 52 calls was deliberately a little absurd. But at the end of that long journey stood a rare red telephone box that had survived for more than 70 years, and for another year, at least, its phone had plenty of calls on the record.
