@AusOpenGolf I really hope I'm wrong. I want our tournament to succeed and ultimately be allowed to be part of one of the LPGA Tour's Asian Swings again. Will be up to fans to show up to make this happen. Current Golf Aus admin has shown a reckless dismissiveness towards LPGA involvement.
@AusOpenGolf How many current top 60 international LPGA players will be participating this year? Hopefully that number gets into double figures this time. But thus far, this page has been focusing purely on how many Aussies are playing. Selling that as field strength. Not looking good so far.
@GolfAust@LPGA 2026 LPGA tour schedule officially released. The Women's Oz Open not back in. Golf Oz's decision under CEO James Sutherland to move the Women's Open to Dec, after the LPGA tour had ended, still diminishing the event & the women's events that used to be played a week b4 it in Feb.
@AusOpenGolf That date looks very promising: Won't know for sure until the LPGA reveals the 26 schedule; but provided Feb-Mar to 1st US event doesn't change; then the Women's Oz Open may be the final event of the Spring Asian Swing after the Blue Bay in China? Are we back on the LPGA Tour?π
@AusOpenGolf@ISPSHanda Final point: The events old slot in mib Feb won't work now: 1) LIV Oz event now has that date. Would have split broadcast viewership & attendance between Women's Open & LIV. 2) US LPGA event: Founder's Cup now played the weekend before LIV - Women's Oz Open's old LPGA Tour slot.
@AusOpenGolf@ISPSHanda .. players from the LPGA, LET & KLPGA playing like we did when the event was part of the Swing in Feb, 2015 to 2019. Will have to be put after the Blue Bay event in China mid March. Should work well: cooler weather & LPGA players then still get a week off before the nxt US event.
@loreleipees@GolfAust@ISPSHanda@AusOpenGolf I don't know if they'll change things back. The Men's Oz Open has been struggling to attract top international talent for many yrs. I think that's the main concern of those in charge of golf in Oz. There ok with ripping the Womens Open out of the LPGA to pad out the men's event.
@loreleipees@GolfAust@ISPSHanda@AusOpenGolf Players & viewers definitely enjoyed the mixed fmt of the Vic Open back then. It was the Women's Oz Open the next week that was the main draw for talent though; as it used to be a LPGA Tour event. The timing of the Vic Open meant it served well as a warm-up event those players.
@loreleipees@GolfAust@ISPSHanda@AusOpenGolf The move out of the LPGA Tour negatively affected the Vic Open as well. That was played a week b4 the Women's Oz Open so got a lot of LPGA & LET players in that to. It gave the old Vic Open's mixed format, which the current Oz Open is unsuccessfully copying, a real boost.
@loreleipees@GolfAust@ISPSHanda@AusOpenGolf Re the Women's Oz Open: participation levels by LPGA & Ladies European Tour players since it was removed from its Feb slot in 1st Asian leg of the LPGA Tour have been VERY thin. I go into it more in the 3 other parts of my comment thread. Not a premium X user so have word limit.
@LandscopeInfo@Luke_Elvy@AusOpenGolf@GolfAust Re the men's event: I don't follow the PGA tour; so I don't know if it has an Asian leg , like the LPGA has 2 of, that it could slot into. If not; the men's event may be a harder fix than the women's.
@MaxMcCardle@Luke_Elvy@GolfAust Looked at the 2019 Vic Open Women's leaderboard the other day. Was a popular lead-up event to the Women's Oz Open in Feb when the latter was part of the LPGA Tour Asian Swing. Far more LPGA & LET players in that Vic Open than this year's Oz Open! Not even close!
@Greglemore@Luke_Elvy@AusOpenGolf@GolfAust Yes. But this wasn't a true mixed event with the men & women playing directly against each other, or a team event eg: male & female pair event . They just ran the Men's & Women's tournaments at the same time. Main issue I have was very few top players due to bad event scheduling.
@AdamLudeke@Luke_Elvy@AusOpenGolf@GolfAust Agreed. And the Women's Australian Open's slot in the Feb - March Asian leg of the LPGA Tour has been vacant ever since. Golden opportunity going to waste.
@LandscopeInfo@Luke_Elvy@AusOpenGolf@GolfAust I agree with Andrew & Sue. In the 5 years it was part of LPGA tour's Asian leg in Feb; the field was excellent. Nearly a full contingent made up of players from the LPGA & LET tours. Its slot in the Feb - March Asian leg of the tour has been vacant ever since as well.
@golfwritings Absolutely! We had some light for a while with The Women's Oz Open in the 5 years, (6 had the pandemic not happened), it was part of LPGA Tour's Feb - March Asian Swing. Nearly a full field of LPGA & LET players. Its old slot in the Asian Swing has been vacant ever since as well.
@Jack_Quigley @golfwritings They've definitely actively sabotaged the Women's Australian Open taking it out of its still vacant slot in LPGA Asian Swing in February to try & pad out the numbers for the Men's Open. Will just end up running both Opens into the ground with this stupid scheduling decision.
@GolfAust@ISPSHanda@AusOpenGolf ...Oh, & I'll say this one more time for those that don't know: the slot in the LPGA Asian leg of tour that the Women's Australian Open use to be, has been vacant ever since the tournament was moved to when it is now.
@GolfAust@ISPSHanda@AusOpenGolf ... Go look at leaderboards of the Vic Open & Women's Oz Open when it was in the LPGA tour in the 5 years b4 COVID to see how many more LPGA, LET players there were. We're seeing the current scheduling run the Women's Oz Open into the ground!
