Accompanied by call & response singing, maraca & cuá rhythms, bomba is both a celebration & a form of cultural resistance, carrying stories of struggle, survival. Today, it remains a vibrant expression of Afro-Puerto Rican identity, community gathering, & collective freedom.
It is a dynamic dialogue between dancer and drummer, where the dancer’s improvised movements lead and the main drum, called the barril, answers each gesture in real time.
