@__daijana One of my degrees had an audiology program on campus. Once a year, the audiology students got to practice making the ones molded to our ears, and we got the result for just the cost of the various decibel filters.
@jenniferlownby I wish you were closer. I have about 10 situations that need an oboist and I'm 100% sure that working with you would spark joy on my end.
I have, once again, bitten off a larger task than I intended.
I’ll figure it out, it’ll probably be fine, but man do I wish things could be easy once or twice.
@jenniferlownby @MrsWintersMusic I always get super morose when I have a weekend without a gig or a school event.
But I also get crabby when I have too many weekends with gigs or school events.
So I wonder sometimes if I am just morose and have been using flute to lie to myself.
@MrsWintersMusic @jenniferlownby I feel this way a LOT, but it's the trinity of 1.) do my job which involves a lot of theory teaching 2.) practice the flute and 3.) exercise or in any way care for myself
I seem able to juggle 1.5 of them well at any given time. 2 gets dicey and 3 never happens.
@lhbflute This kid mentioned needing a letter on Friday, and I asked for details in an email, which arrived yesterday morning.
They had the letter same day.
2-3 weeks isn't that much of an imposition.
Once again, I am focused on showing up for my students in ways I wish more faculty had showed up for me.
Once again, I am realizing that it's not that hard or particularly time-consuming. You just have to try a little. Or like ... at all.
It's a low bar, friends.
@lhbflute I started out with a tweet about a flute professor who used to agree to write letters for me and then complain in other peoples' lessons that I didn't give her enough lead-time. (2-3 weeks for a job app is all I could ever seem to manage)
@piesaac Are you moving over to Threads? I'm not posting on either platform much these days but am reading over there and would love to keep as many of my Twitter memories as I can.
@piesaac I’ve played along to plenty of Bernstein footage without any issues or real complaints (except standard wind bitching about slow tempos and lung capacity) but also know it’s a static medium so I’m not necessarily following in the same way I might if we were live.
@piesaac I don’t mind extraneous with time under it, as long as none of the extraneous goes in the direction of the next beat.
It’s survivable if you’re mentally prepped for it, but if you glance up and it looks like a two and you’re genuinely following, you’re gonna play two.
@deeperbeats@piesaac And then you stop looking because they’re USELESS and they get irate when they make eye contact for something legit and you forget to check in.
@PribblePrabble Yeah, but their elite person is special so obviously it’s a conspiracy and not just the way the cookies crumble.
There’s a lot of effed up stuff about the arts/academia, but I am often grateful for the perspective and thick skin.
I give myself a lot of sh*t for being awkward and/or abrasive, but I just endured a 20 minute conversation in which someone complained about the bad hire they’d made for a job where i’d been the other finalist.
I smiled and nodded politely and now I want a cocktail.
