At today’s #AGRIFISH Council, we focused on the choices ahead:

➡️ a strong and sustainable framework for fisheries in the 2028–2034 EU budget. We take note of the efforts by the Irish presidency that led the Council to reach a Partial General Approach.
It was my responsibility to highlight the Commission’s concerns on the text.

➡️ simpler, more flexible #EMFAF support including for fleet modernisation and the energy transition. Our targeted EMFAF amendment is designed to turn that principle into practical support: less complexity, better access to funding and more tools for fishers and aquaculture producers.

➡️ defending EU fishing interests in the 2027 North-East Atlantic consultations.

➡️ strengthening Europe’s fisheries globally through our upcoming Vision 2040.

The sector is under pressure. Europe must help it modernise, invest and remain sustainable, competitive and resilient.

Είχα σήμερα τη χαρά και την τιμή να συναντήσω τον Στέλιο Μαλακόπουλο, έναν άνθρωπο που με την πορεία του αποδεικνύει στην πράξη τι σημαίνει δύναμη ψυχής, επιμονή και αποφασιστικότητα. Σε ηλικία μόλις 18 ετών, ένα τραγικό τροχαίο ανέτρεψε τη ζωή του. Ο Στέλιος όμως δεν επέτρεψε στις δυσκολίες να τον καθορίσουν. Επέστρεψε στον αθλητισμό, έφτασε στην κορυφή, κατέρριψε παγκόσμια ρεκόρ στο άλμα εις μήκος και εκπροσώπησε με υπερηφάνεια τον Ελληνισμό σε Παραολυμπιακούς Αγώνες και διεθνείς διοργανώσεις. Πριν από λίγες μέρες πρόσθεσε ακόμη μία σελίδα σε αυτή την εμπνευσμένη διαδρομή, κατακτώντας το χάλκινο μετάλλιο στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα Παρατριάθλου στην Ποντεβέντρα, σε ένα άθλημα νέο για τον ίδιο. Η ιστορία του Στέλιου δεν αφορά μόνο τον αθλητισμό. Είναι ένα μήνυμα προς όλους μας, και ιδιαίτερα προς τους νέους μας, ότι τα όρια τα θέτουμε εμείς και ότι με πίστη και σκληρή δουλειά κάθε εμπόδιο μπορεί να γίνει αφετηρία για κάτι μεγαλύτερο. Στέλιο σου ευχόμαστε κάθε επιτυχία στους επόμενους στόχους σου.

Ως Κυβέρνηση, συνεχίζουμε να στηρίζουμε έμπρακτα τον παραολυμπιακό αθλητισμό και κάθε αθλητή και αθλήτρια που τιμά τη σημαία μας.

Good exchanges today in the margins of the #AGRIFISH Council in Brussels with 🇫🇷@CathChabaud, 🇭🇷 @david_vlajcic, 🇮🇹@FrancescoLollo1 and 🇩🇰 Maria Reumert Gjerding.

We focused, among others, on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028 -2034 for #fisheries, the need for fleet modernisation, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) priorities, the fishing opportunities under the WestMed and the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) amendment proposal.

One main takeaway: 🇪🇺 fisheries need investment, resilience and a level playing field.

We are working for competitive fisheries, thriving coastal communities and a healthy ocean.

In New York, during the high-level segment of the General Assembly, I met the two leaders separately and accompanied the Secretary-General in his bilateral meetings with each leader. With Rosemary DiCarlo, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, we met the two negotiators with the intention to review the CBMs that the two sides agreed to develop. These measures should contribute to building trust and give way to new initiatives.

During his visit to Cyprus, the Secretary-General reiterated his commitment to continue to support the parties in their search for a solution until the last day of his mandate, which ends in three months. In New York, the Secretary-General met separately with each leader and exchanged visions to overcome the challenges and be able to move forward. Although a trilateral meeting was not initially planned, the Greek Cypriot leader proposed to have one this week, but, at this moment, the Turkish Cypriot leader did not consider it.

In this context, in relation to the confidence-building measures agreed upon by both sides, the Secretary-General reiterated the urgency for the leaders to proceed with their implementation as a reflection of their ability to cooperate. Such cooperation, if achieved, would be a demonstration of their willingness to initiate a process towards a sustainable solution.

The UN has carried out the exercise of convergences, which will be available to the parties when they start negotiations. In addition, the UN will invite both sides to present their proposals on methodology. I will continue my facilitation efforts until the end of December and, in October, during my next visit to Cyprus, I will continue to encourage both parties to create the conducive environment required for the start of a new process.

In these times of transformation, the credibility of the UN must be safeguarded. And credibility requires consistency in the application of International Law.

For my country, Cyprus, this is not an abstract principle. It is a painful, existential reality.
Fifty-two years have passed since the illegal Turkish invasion of Cyprus. An act of aggression, violating the core principles of the UN Charter.
