One More Quiet Day Before Storm Chances Ramp Up

We've got just one more day of a fairly typical July weather pattern before things begin turning more active heading into the weekend.

Today, expect only a few spotty afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Most of East Tennessee will stay dry, but if you do get under one of these storms, it could produce a quick downpour with locally heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and gusty winds.

The bigger weather change arrives Friday.

An upper-level trough will dig into the eastern United States, increasing our coverage of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms Friday, Saturday, and into the rest of the weekend.

Not everyone will see rain all day long, but we'll have more storms around each afternoon, and they'll be capable of producing torrential rainfall. With the atmosphere loaded with tropical moisture, localized flooding and flash flooding will once again become a concern, especially where storms repeatedly move over the same areas.

We'll also be watching Saturday closely. The Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of our area under a Level 1 risk for isolated severe storms. While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few storms could become strong enough to produce damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning.

I'll show you when storms are most likely to develop, which communities have the greatest chance for heavy rain, and whether this active pattern sticks around into next week in your full forecast.
