one of the best gifts you can give your child is one of the simplest, and completely free (in terms of money)
the "30 Million Word Gap" study is one of the most cited pieces of research in early childhood education
researchers followed 42 families for 2.5 years, recording every word. by age 3, children in professional families had heard 45 million words. kids in poverty: 13 million
the ramifications are long-lasting. even at ages 9-10, the kids exposed to more words had stronger language skills, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
there is also a socioeconomic disparity here. the good news is, this may be solvable by simple talking more! the bad news is, it may be harder than it sounds. perhaps the disparity exists in the first place because low-SES parents focus more on making ends meet than talking to their kids
so to summarize — you should be talk-maxxing as much as you can! narrate your day, respond to their babbling, read to them. talking is all you need
@godlywomanhood Correct. The foundational work that isn’t mentioned here, is spending your kids’ lives becoming their safe place, cheerleader, trusted confidant and mentor. If you do this well, most kids will respect the rules. If you it poorly, then yes, they will go behind your back & do bad.
@Romy_Holland Yes, put him down 5 mins before he’s really tired (the sweet spot) and he will sleep. Use an app to track sweet spots. Works like a charm.
@pactconsumers Yes, the current lawsuit against HooDoo resort in Oregon could result in the closure of many ski resorts across the country since waivers apparently mean nothing now. If you don’t know not to take your 4-yo in the terrain park, well…natural selection at work.
@NoahRevoy I agree with most here, except your assumption that men doing more chores would “overperforming”.
You’re clearly unaware of the # of men “underperforming” at home, along with how hot it is for a man to sometimes “rescue” his wife from the dishes ;) -A happy, dish-rescued wife.
I’ve lost count of how often my kids’ writing mirrors whatever we’re reading.
Today my 11-year-old proudly showed me a story-within-a-story - the technique straight from the book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.
People say it doesn’t matter what kids read as long as they are reading…
But they are wrong.
Yes, start small. Yes, start by helping them fall in love with reading - whatever the genre
But their reading appetite MUST evolve into bigger, better, bolder literature.
I'm reading the book "How to Read Literature Like a Professor"
The authors discusses how nearly every book from the west is touched by Shakespeare
Authors are either mimicking him, mocking him, or making him new
Modern writers probably don't even know this because they are simply copying the copies
But I believe the best are still being trained by reading the best.
Reading my children the best stories ever written from as many different authors, places, & times as possible has had a profound impact on them
Not just in their writing, but on their character, their minds, & how they see the world
YOU are the one shaping your children's inner world - the well they’ll draw from for the rest of their lives.
Fill it with greatness♥️
What's one book that shaped your inner world as a child?
@nickitruesdell Same for us. We live in an expensive resort community and my husband works in construction, but we make it work. My kids have full lives, friendships, and fun every day.
@helen_of_roy Yes! Putting my little in a little part time Christian preschool while I schooled our older was magical. Gave me one on one time with the other and filled her social bucket while teaching her basic social etiquette.
@yuarecold@teachthemx3 There are these crazy things called “other homeschoolers”, church, extracurricular activities, sports, normal conversation 🤷🏼♀️ lol!!
