Crazy story. Just reconnected with a buddy who told me last year he spent 4.5 MONTHS in open air jail in the Philippines for visa overstay/passport shenanigans. They wanted $35k to get out, he didn't have it or wouldn't pay, so he sat there, sleeping in the rain, rats, open trenches for bathrooms.

Everyone there was an overstay. Money grab. An 80 year old woman who had overstayed because she was in the hospital after a stroke. A Yugoslavian guy who had overstayed BECAUSE A SHARK BIT OFF HIS ARM AND LEG (he killed the shark before he passed out). Recently - wounds still healing and bandaged (Yugoslavia got him out within two weeks). My buddy tended to a dying man for four days before he expired.

His employer canceled his contract and left him. Embassy checked on him once a week, mostly confirming he had access to a toothbrush. Eventually he got out because his uncle is a Freemason and the freemasons can do some shit. NGL he's a hard dude, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a bit more to the story, but still, what a story.

So. That was wild.
