"The smart and perverse people are those who fudge around with the laws of the genre which they pretend to honor by establishing it as dominant, through the discourse of the film. Example: Mr. Spielberg. Absolute creep."
––Jean-Pierre Gorin, 1988 class lecture
Genuinely, I would love to hear the logic behind this defense. How does the argument that things would’ve eventually turned out the same way without him absolve Spielberg of anything? He was still the one who laid the groundwork.
This is still not uncontroversial but the fact that it has gotten a lot less controversial is reflective of a larger decline and depoliticization of film criticism.
I liked Scorsese as a teenager, but after that, he’s really close to nothing. I can’t stomach the insipid voiceovers that hold your hand through a 3 hour film. It’s not about the AI business. We already know he worships money and celebrity. At this point, he’s just a nuisance.
The affection for late Malick stems from a boomer-68'er error: by valuing ugly sentimental films in which knocking about a GoPro is thought of as sufficient means to film God, many critics have ended up valuing anti-commercial standards in the name of a misplaced anti-classicism.

O foco é em fazer full-text search e facilitar a leitura (assim você não precisa ficar dando zoom em PDF).
