To thread this with another idea I'll borrow from Baudrillard's signs which basically states that a sign represents some physical reality. If the symbol represents some unseen truth then messing with it, obscuring it -even explaining it away-can make the truth harder to recognize

Sometimes my brain makes weird connections in a snap moment... like the time I figured out 21 pilots was named after the 21 pilots who perished after a deliberately overlooked aircraft malfunction in the Arthur Miller play, All My Sons

It isn't always right but I'm mildly aware that the human brain is always making connections subconsciously. If pattern recognition is built into our brains, symbols in our world clue us in on the metaphysical (truth that cannot be perceived with the physical eye)
