After my confrontation with Hannah, I left home, I was very angry😾. A coronel appealed the law for me to come back, so I called Theodore Sedgewick, a lawyer who had anti-slavery feelings, and asked for his help to get my freedom.

I was born as a slave on Pieter Hogeboom’s farm in New York, where I was called Bet. When Hogeboom’s daughter Hannah married, he gave me to her and her husband when I was only seven years old.
It was very hard to be a slave and to feel used and misprized...

Did you knew that my name, Phillis, comes from the ship in which I was transported from Africa to America and my surname, Wheatley, from John and Susanna Wheatley, the merchant family who decided to buy me to make me their personal maid and servant? It’s kind of curious.🤔
