Our meta-analysis is published - prek/kindergarten RAN *robustly* relates to later reading ability in English.
Please share with those 🧑🏫👪who need to advocate for including #RAN in a #dyslexia#screening battery. Open access paper! #RANmeta

All Americans should be horrified and outraged by the brazen terrorist attacks on Israel and the slaughter of innocent civilians. We grieve for those who died, pray for the safe return of those who’ve been held hostage, and stand squarely alongside our ally, Israel, as it dismantles Hamas. As we support Israel’s right to defend itself against terror, we must keep striving for a just and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
Last week in lab meeting, I mentioned that I loved @oliviarodrigo's cover of @NoahKahan's (gorgeous New England anthem) Stick Season. I've never felt so truly relevant and cool to the undergrads in the lab. (They were born after I started college & I don't do high-waisted jeans.)
I wanted to be a pediatrician for ages. Now I am a scientist who wants to think with other smart and nice people and do big things together that help kids. This is a dream!
I have been having a scientific and intellectual *blast* today at the @AmerAcadPeds and @OppLabs “Thriving Youth Convening.” So much fun to represent @NU_DevSci and @NU_SoC in this national conversation. Buzzing with ideas!
The @yesread#Dyslexia Foundation fall practitioner conference is shaping up to be stellar! In-person in Boston, or if you can’t travel to America’s finest city, live online. I’ll be talking about RAN and individual diffs in #fluency. Register here: https://t.co/WVFGyslIaL
@JeanBerkoG Every year when I teach your work in my Language Development course, I mention your side gig with the Ig Nobels. You have big fans here at Northwestern!
Why yes, I do walk around classrooms looking ridiculous sometimes! In this course, we also did some primal screams in our anechoic chamber and went to a mainstage performance at Second City!
Profs @elizsn & Roxane Heinze-Bradshaw taught a #NUSoC first-year seminar called “Serious Play: From the Sandbox to the Stage.” The class brought together threads of study related to the art & science of play. Students explored how play is important to how we learn & communicate.
Just a pleasant academic moment: I was in a small workshop about effective mentoring for new faculty. The colleague leading it was wearing a super cool watch⌚️and afterwards we nerded about #horology and promised to each wear a different watch to discuss at the next session.
Happy birthday to Julia Child, one of my all-time favorite people. Visiting her kitchen is a favorite ritual. I try to listen to what she’d say. Do the tough thing, don’t worry if you’re too old, or don’t sound just right, or are the “wrong” shape or size. Savor life’s pleasures.
Excited to visit @CELLuindy next month for this event! Please share with educators and professionals you know in Indiana. Hope to see lots of folks there.

@KatieRGordon Ooh fascinating! I co-taught an undergrad first-year seminar on “serious play” aka the study of improv games for theatre and play as a way to learn language. Will add this in for next offering.
