.@MarkDever, on Adam at the tree of the knowledge of good and evil & Jesus at the roman tree, the cross:
"At the first tree, we fell; at the second tree, we rise."
“The devil is no fool. He can get people feeling about heaven the way they ought to feel about hell. He can make them fear the means of grace the way they do not fear sin. And he does so, not by light but by obscurity, not by realities but by shadows.”
—Thomas Merton
White supremacy is evil and it is helpful for us to say so without qualification. This should be uncontroversial within the church but unfortunately that cannot be assumed right now.
There's been a lot of arguments about whether Christians should aspire to be "winsome"--whether it's effective in this post-Christian or "negative" world, using Renn's terminology.
The answer is that sometimes it is effective and sometimes it's not. You winsome, you losesome.
When Christians say things like, "We tried being kind and it didn't work," in response to a lack of political gains, we betray a misunderstanding of what it looks like for the gospel to "work."
The Herculaneum papyri are more than 1800 papyri that were carbonized by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (79 CE). IT'S the only surviving library from antiquity that exists in its entirety. With x-rays, these scrolls are being read for the first time in millennia
“I am the least . . .”
• AD 55: “of all the apostles” (1 Cor. 15:9)
• AD 60: “of all the saints” (Eph. 3:8)
• AD 62: “of all sinners” (1 Tim. 1:15)
Christian maturity is downward. It is growing not less aware of your unworthiness, but more.
Byzantine and post-Byzantine era manuscripts and documents, as well as classical ancient texts of Homer, Sophocles, Demosthenes, Hesiod, Aristotle, and many authors from Hellenistic period are stored in the library of Great Meteoron, one of the wealthiest of its kind.

"The OT may be likened to a chamber richly furnished but dimly lighted; the introduction of light brings into it nothing which was not in it before; but it brings out into clearer view much of what is in it but was only dimly or even not at all perceived before." -Warfield

it’s all the same humanism wearing different masks. however, you were created to trust in Someone bigger than “self”.
Our God is so big, he can use Mathematics to reveal his transcendent ordering of the universe. For me, math has always been more in line with the problem of evil 😂. Cf. Why God Makes Sense in a World that Doesn’t” by @gavinortlund
Toxic positivity is pressuring people to look on the bright side. They have to suppress anxiety, anger, sadness, and grief.
Healthy support is shielding people from the dark side. You invite them to express their pain, and show them they're not alone and won't feel it forever.
