When Kirk was killed, I was really worried the administration was going to turn it into a Horst Wessel moment and institute a major crackdown on civil liberties. They didn’t for two reasons: one unpredictable, one predictable. Nobody predicted that a popular movement would turn his death into a punchline, which deflated the dire threats of right-wing figures and made them seem fatuous. In the second, which anyone could have predicted, Trump just didn’t put that much effort into canonizing Kirk, because he doesn’t care about anyone but himself. He believes (after surviving an assassination attempt) that if you get assassinated, you’re a loser.
