@KaneBrides I think there must be some nest parasitising business sometimes, I had a nest go from 4-5 with an odd coloured egg right before it was due to hatch!
@fbuner Mike and me found one of our nests last year when we heard the most godawful sound as a male curlew yanked the skin on the neck of a cock pheasant passing his nest. Not a sight I expected, or sound!
A new project led by the @Gameandwildlife aims to boost numbers of threatened #wading birds on the Solent coastline.
The team will create #habitat & trial non-lethal #predation management measures, to help local coastal bird populations to recover.

@TonyHockley @ElizaPacey@curlewcalls@knottbrothersuk@DavidGray@CurlewAction Thank you. I’m 50% funded by Bournemouth University and half of my supervisory team are academics. GWCT scientists just want to see the best outcomes for wildlife, we’re not being told what to say!
@TBuck69246394 @DorsetBirdClub I’m not sure where this trap is, it sounds like it may be on private ground, but I just wanted to highlight some of the difficult issues surrounding the balance of bird numbers in the forest.
@TBuck69246394 @DorsetBirdClub In this photo I took a crow is eating a curlew chick which was part way through hatching. To put it in perspective for c.50 pairs of curlew they have fledged just 4 chicks in 2020 and 8 in 2021 across the whole forest.
@Ewing_birds@fbuner@KaneBrides@JCaseNature@WildCRU_Ox Me and my colleague Mike are in our second year successfully using cameras on wader nests and if anyone is interested in the strict protocol we follow for deployment please do get in touch.
@Ewing_birds@fbuner@KaneBrides@JCaseNature@WildCRU_Ox Hi Harry, if you'd like some more info please feel free to PM me and I'll give you Mike Short's number here at GWCT and he'd be happy to chat to you about this :) A lot of his experience has been from catching and tagging foxes in long grass environments.
