Closest approximation of the GR "α" in EN is in the Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Northern English "stack" (open front unrounded), NOT "father"

Pronunciation: it's a damn complex matter, matching sounds of one language with those of another, e.g. no equivalent of the GR "α" in EN
