INEC VOTER REGISTRATION...SOKOTO GOVERNMENT DECLARES WORK-FREE DAY

The Sokoto State Government has declared Friday, 24th July, 2026 a work-free day to enable Civil Servants of voting age who have not yet registered to participate in the ongoing Voter registration exercise and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Governor Ahmed Aliyu urges Civil Servants who have not registered to take advantage of the work-free day to obtain their PVCs, to enable them exercise their civic responsibility in the forthcoming general elections.

A statement by his Director General Media and Publicity, Abubakar Bawa says, the Governor restates his Administration's commitment to ensuring that Civil Servants in the State are given every opportunity to participate in the National assignments and exercise their Civic rights.

The statement further enjoins the public yet to register or have attained the stipulated age for Voter registration, to take advantage of the two-weeks extension of the exercise to register and obtain their PVCs.

The two-weeks extension of the ongoing Voter registration exercise ends Sunday, 26th July, 2026.

NTA Partners Delta Central Senator Ede Dafinone To Revive Amukpe Community Station In Sapele

The Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, has entered into a strategic partnership with the Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone to revive the NTA Community Station in Amukpe, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

During a courtesy visit to the Director-General of NTA, Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos, Senator Dafinone says reviving the station is critical to information dissemination, national cohesion and youth empowerment in the senatorial district.

According to him, "the partnership will involve rehabilitation of the transmission infrastructure, provision of modern broadcast equipment and installation of an alternative power supply system."

He noted that the project aligns with renewed calls by stakeholders and community leaders for national integration through access to reliable information on government policies and programmes.

The Director-General of NTA Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos, commended Senator Dafinone for the intervention, describing it as a model for legislative-executive synergy in sustaining public broadcasting.

He explained that community stations such as NTA Amukpe-Sapele are strategic to NTA’s mandate as Africa’s largest television network, ensuring that rural communities are not left to rely on foreign broadcasting signals.

The Director-General assured of NTA’s commitment to ensuring that all its community stations are back on air to serve Nigerians.

He added that the Authority is undergoing transformation in line with modern television broadcasting standards to ensure quality content and affordable access for all Nigerians.

Rainy Season, Difficult Terrain Now Biggest Challenge as Terrorists Retreat into Remote Forests — Theatre Commander

The Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA (JTF NW OPFY), Major General W.B. Idris, has said that sustained military offensives have forced terrorists and armed bandits away from major highways into remote forests and isolated rural communities, where difficult terrain and the rainy season have become the principal operational challenges confronting security forces.

Major General Idris made the disclosure on Thursday during an interactive session with defence correspondents at the Headquarters of Operation FANSAN YAMMA in Gusau, Zamfara State, while responding to questions on the security situation across the North-West and the continued attacks on farming communities despite the military’s sustained operations.

The Theatre Commander explained that months of aggressive kinetic operations, intelligence-led raids and area domination patrols have significantly degraded terrorist capabilities along major road corridors, compelling criminal groups to alter their operational tactics.

According to him, the military now exercises effective control over most strategic highways and major transportation routes across the theatre, denying terrorists the freedom to operate openly as they once did.

“Our troops have dominated virtually all the major roads across the theatre. Trunk A and Trunk B roads are well secured through sustained military presence, patrols and offensive operations,” he said.

He noted that between January and April 2026, Operation FANSAN YAMMA consistently recorded significant operational successes on a weekly basis, including the recovery of weapons and the neutralisation of terrorists, forcing armed groups to abandon their traditional areas of operation.

“During that period, we recorded an average weekly recovery of about five weapons and the neutralisation of at least ten terrorists. The sustained pressure has forced them to modify their tactics and avoid direct confrontation with our troops,” he added.

Major General Idris said the terrorists have increasingly withdrawn into remote forests, rocky terrain and isolated settlements where they exploit the vast geographical landscape to evade military patrols.

Rather than attacking motorists on major highways, he explained, the criminals now target vulnerable farmers and rural communities located deep within the hinterland, creating the false impression that security forces are absent from those areas.

“They have realised that the major roads are no longer safe for them. They now move deep into the hinterland, where they attack isolated farmers and vulnerable communities. When such incidents occur, it sometimes creates the impression that security forces are not present, whereas the reality is that these attacks happen in extremely remote locations,” he said.

The commander observed that the current rainy season has further complicated military operations because the difficult terrain restricts the movement of heavy combat vehicles into remote areas where terrorists now seek refuge.

He explained that the Nigerian Army’s operational vehicles, including five-tonne, seven-tonne and ten-tonne tactical vehicles, are designed for demanding military tasks but face mobility challenges on waterlogged rural roads and soft terrain during periods of heavy rainfall.

“Our operational vehicles are heavy military platforms. During the rainy season, movement becomes extremely difficult because the terrain becomes soft and inaccessible. These are not vehicles that can easily traverse flooded or muddy routes leading into remote forests,” he explained.

According to the Theatre Commander, the operational limitations imposed by weather are not restricted to ground forces alone.

SENATE THREATENS TO SANCTIONS RECALCITRANT MDAs

Arising from the persistent failure, neglect, or outright refusal by several government-owned Enterprises and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to honour invitations from the Senate in the discharge of its constitutional oversight duties, the Senate has resolved to apply sanctions on defaulters.

At plenary on Thursday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance notified the Senate that the response to the committee's ongoing investigation into the financial operations of MDAs and GOEs is being undermined.

Senate emphasized that it is not a matter of choice. Agencies, as required by law, must comply with the Fiscal Responsibility Act with regard to internally generated revenue, collections from stamp duties, operating surplus, and statutory remittances into the Consolidated Revenue Fund.

The Senate has called on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Head of the Civil Service, and ministers to ensure strict compliance by agencies under their supervision.

PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES ADDITION OF FOUR NEW DIVISIONS FOR NIGERIAN ARMY AND RECRUITMENT OF 28,000 PERSONNEL TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY

President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army’s structure from eight to twelve divisions: the four new divisions are 5 Division Headquarters - Makurdi, Benue state; 9 Division Headquarters – Ilorin Kwara State; 10 Division Headquarters – Jalingo, Taraba state and 83 Division Headquarters – Benin, Edo State. This is a landmark move to enhance the country’s security architecture and improve the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.

A statement by Special Adviser to the President Bayo Onaguga says the approval underscores the President’s unwavering commitment to equipping the Armed Forces to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges effectively and to strengthen national defence capabilities further. This is a landmark move to enhance the country’s security architecture and improve the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.

It adds, the expansion builds on the Administration’s sustained investments in the Armed Forces, including approval for the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel, acquisition of critical military platforms and equipment, improvements in troop welfare, and ongoing support for operational readiness and force modernisation.

Under the new structure, the Nigerian Army will operate twelve divisions, strategically positioned across the country as follows:

1. 1 Division Headquarters – Kaduna (Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States)
2. 2 Division Headquarters – Ibadan (Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo States)
3. 3 Division Headquarters – Jos (Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe States)
4. 5 Division Headquarters – Makurdi (Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi States)
5. 6 Division Headquarters – Port Harcourt (Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States)
6. 7 Division Headquarters – Maiduguri (Borno and Yobe States)
7. 8 Division Headquarters – Sokoto (Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States)
8. 9 Division Headquarters – Ilorin (Kwara and Niger States)
9. 10 Division Headquarters – Jalingo (Taraba and Adamawa States)
10. 81 Division Headquarters – Lagos (Lagos and Ogun States)
11. 82 Division Headquarters – Enugu (Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi and Imo States)
12. 83 Division Headquarters – Benin City (Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States).

The establishment of the four new Divisions will significantly improve command and control, decentralise operational decision-making, strengthen border security, enhance the protection of critical national infrastructure, improve counter-insurgency and internal security operations, and ensure faster military response to emerging threats nationwide.

Implementation of the new force structure will be done in two phases. The first phase, covering the establishment of the 5, 9, and 10 Divisions and the reorganisation of existing formations, will be completed by September 2026. The second phase, involving the establishment of the 83 Division and further reorganisation, is expected to be completed by December 2026.

The statement further says President Tinubu commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, and all officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The President reaffirmed his Administration’s determination to continue investing in the Armed Forces, ensuring they remain adequately equipped, highly motivated, and fully capable of protecting the nation and guaranteeing the safety and security of all Nigerians.
