Forensic Seismology: Application of seismology to investigate (and hopefully mitigate the impact of) social, legal, political, and/or security implications of seismic events (usually non-earthquake events).
Following the m 8.8 Kamchatka earthquake, the Earth's normal modes are visible on broadband seismometers around the world, as here at the San Pablo in central Spain. The lowest mode, 0S2, shows that the Earth deforms every 52 minutes due to the earthquake. @GEO3BCN_CSIC
Comparing the amplitudes of the mag 8.8 and mag 7.4 Kamchatka earthquakes at a @GEO3BCN_CSIC broad-band seismic station located in NE Spain. Amplitudes for today's earthquake are almost 6 times larger.
Section from the 2025-07-29 major M8.8 119 km ESE of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia #earthquake.
Largest event worldwide since the M9.1 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake.
Sixth largest event ever recorded, with the same magnitude as the 1906 Ecuador-Colombia EQ and the 2010 Chile EQ.

On July 21, there were 6 earthquakes in New Jersey (magnitude 0.7 to 2.0).
Near the epicenter of the big - magnitude 4.8 - earthquake in 2024, but in a separate cluster about 20 km to the northeast.
